Butch James made his Super 12 debut for the Sharks in 2001 against the Bulls and later that year he made his South Africa debut in the match against France as a 21-year-old.
In the France game he started at flyhalf and managed to keep this role throughout the 2001 Tri-Nations series.
James was then struck down by injury and had to have two major operations, one on each knee, each requiring at least six months to recover.
He made his long awaited return to Test rugby in the South African 2006 Tri Nations campaign and was a member of the South Africa squad that toured England and Ireland but was again struck down by injury.
He started the 2007 Tri Nations as first choice flyhalf for South Africa. His first name is actually 'Robert' but is known as 'Butch' after his grandmother gave him the nickname as an infant.
In 2008 he returned to Bok duty under Peter de Villiers and is one of the overseas Boks in the team.
He currently plies his trade at Bath rugby club in England. He is the incumbent Bok No 10.
