The former SA U21 hooker moved to the Cheetahs in 2007 and has come on in leaps and bounds since breaking onto the scene.
The robust young man returned to the province of his schooling after fears that he may find his playing time limited behind Gary Botha and Chiliboy Ralepelle at the Bulls.
He made his provincial debut for the Blue Bulls against the Leopards in 2005 and earned his Super debut for the Bulls against the Hurrincaes in 2006
The talented young star was caught in the middle of a tug-of-war between the Bulls and the Cheetahs over his contract in 2007.
It has since been resolved and he has not looked back since joining the men from Bloemfontein.
His cousin, Richardt Strauss, was also a hooker for the Cheetahs, but has had to play second fiddle behind him thus far in the Super 14 and Currie cup campaigns and subsequently sought greener pastures in Ireland.
The 103 kg 22-year-old enjoyed a strong Super 14 and has been rewarded for his good play.
Strauss was called up for national duty and was said to be 'shocked' when he got the news to travel to Australia during the 2008 Tri-Nations.
He provided bench cover for Schalk Brits on Saturday 19 July and earned his international debut when he came on in the second half.
Strauss did cover duty for the remainder of the 2008 Tri-Nations, but missed out on the November tour to the UK following the return of John Smit to action with Chiliboy Ralepelle leapfrogging him in the pecking order.
Missed out on selection for the Springboks' tour to Europe at the end of 2009 despite an outstanding Currie Cup campaign where he captained the Cheetahs to the final.
