The new Springbok coach is a rather unfamiliar figure to South African rugby fans. The 50-year-old has never held a high profile coaching role in South Africa. He hasn't coached one of the major unions in the Currie Cup or a Super 14 franchise.
His rise to prominence has come about with his coaching of South African age group sides where he coached both the U19 and U21 sides. His appointment as head coach of the Spears collapsed when the Eastern Cape side was refused entry into the Super 14. He coached the Emerging Springboks in 2007 and has most recently been involved with Stellenbosch in an advisory role. Here is the official profile of the new coach provided by SA Rugby.
