Marius Joubert's flagging career may have been handed a lifeline with the news that the Springbok centre will move to the Cheetahs for next season's Super 14.

The move comes in the wake of Western Province and the Stormers deciding not to renew his provincial contract. Joubert's career has suffered over the past two seasons as a result of injuries and a massive dip in form.

Joubert, who is still under contract to the Springboks, has signed with Free State Rugby Union for next year. He will join up with his new franchise on the 1st of January 2007.

"I have really enjoyed my time and the set-up at Western Province," Joubert said on Monday.

The 27-year-old, who has 30 caps for his country, is the latest high profile signing by Rassie Erasmus. The Cheetahs have added Hendrik Meyer, Marius Shoeman, Ashley Johnson, Adriaan Strauss, Frankie Wagenstrom, Warren de Bruyn and Quenton Davids recently in a bid to improve on their impressive debut season in the Super 14.

Hendrik Meyer has already made a huge impact since his move and the prospect of him playing inside a fully-fit Marius Joubert is one that is sure to excite the Cheetahs faithful. Joubert will have his work cut out in earning a place in the Cheetahs midfield as their are a number of talented centres plying their trade in the Free State at the moment.
