The Australian Rugby Union over the past decade had flirted with the notion of approaching and acquiring Australian rugby league players, with a recipe of sprinkling a generous amount of money, adding water and creating an instant Wallaby, from an already-established rugby league superstar, producing the likes of Andrew Walker, Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuquri, and Matt Rogers.

Four Chiefs players are returning to New Zealand from Perth today – three with injuries and the fourth due to a two-week SANZAR suspension for foul play.

Whilst the new Super 15 franchise, the Melbourne Rebels have been given a permission slip from the ARU to sign up to 10 internationals, the ARU has warned the side not to approach any Australian contracted players playing in any of the other Aussie Super 14 teams, until June 1 (Australian Sevens and academy players are exempt from the rule). The ARU has insisted that this anti-poaching rule is applicable to any of the Australian provincial sides, the Rebels claim that they are at a real disadvantage and may escalate this matter to the courts, if the ARU do not ‘budge’.
