Why the Wallabies might lose…on purpose

Thursday, September 13 Martin Johnson may have let the cat out of the bag when he admitted that Wales may beat Australia. He called it an ‘upset’.

But what if the Wallabies conspired to lose in order secure an easier route to the final? Would that be cheating, or just plain smart?

Wallaby coach John Connolly and Stirling Mortlock have both expressed a preference for playing the Springboks over England. The Wallabies are more familiar with their South African counterparts, and know that they could beat them in a one-off.

If the Springbok beat England on Friday, then Australia will know that a loss in Cardiff would probably pit them against the Boks in the quarter-finals, and then potentially Argentina in the semi’s.

If however, they beat Wales, the Wallabies would be on collision course to meet the All Blacks in the semi-finals.

It’s a long shot to say that the Wallabies would go as far as to throw a World Cup match, but the possibility is certainly there.

The Wallabies have grown a reputation for being one of the most cerebral teams playing Rugby Union and the idea of losing on purpose will certainly have come up in their tournament plans.

Watch this one with interest!

Mmmmmh interesting indeed!
Shocked

By madmole - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I doubt they will. I'd rather go into the quarters/semis/finals having won all my games.

By greenblud - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Every team that has won a world cup has never lost a game in the tournament they won

By Nitronic - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Bring it on!!! Wallaby twats!!!!

By forgottenplayer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
What is the problem? It does not make a difference if we beat them in the quarterfinals or in the final.

By brazendaze - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
dosn't matter - if you wanna be the world champions you gonna have to beat eveybody - so if you play the all blacks in a pool game or in the final you should be able to beat them. I dont think the wallabies could beat us or new zealand in full strength so let them do whatever they want.

By njoroqiby - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
that sounds funny. easier route to finals via BOKS? either they r very brave or very silly

By brazendaze - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
When Australia see the manner in which we will mutilate England this friday night - I cannot possibly see them wanting to rather play the boks than England.

England are a mess and if they get them in the quaters they are guaranteed a semi. Not the case if they meet the boks in the quaters. And if you want to beat an all black team a semifinal would be a good place to do it. The complancency that the ab's usually suc(edited)b to tends to wear off on big final day.

Interesting and I would not put it past them. To be honest it's about hedging your bets and trying to meet the opposition on your terms. Rather clever really, but it won't work because the Aussies don't look like they have the ability to win 3 tough games in a row, which is what is needed to win the RWC

By Alinon - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
What a load of poo!
The Wallies are never going to throw a game.
If they loose its because they are k@k.
This is just an excuse thought up in advance incase they lose.

Must be running out of things to write about if this rubbish qualifies for publishing.

By sharktank1 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
if they think that we are easier than England, than those wallabies really are stupid...

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I heard some of the Aussies say that aswell. Look at Survivor. Throw a challenge and comes back to bite you in the butt.

By devstar - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
sheep shaggers Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy somehow if they do this it shows them under estimating the power of the boks we will beat them silly and they will be sent home with their tails between their legs. Twisted Evil

Hey I was actually talking about something similar with work colleagues today...

We were discussing the possibility of SA throwing the match against the USA to choose a quarter final opponent. Bearing in mind the SA - USA game is the very last pool game so we will know all the permutations... if need be we can even lose by enough to affect points difference! So Australia need to be careful what they wish for!!

But as someone stated above this is just looking for trouble. Lose to the team you "set" yourself up to play and you are going to have major egg on your face!

This stinks of typical Aussie mind games... but I suppose if you can't take on teams physically you need to use everything else you can. They need to be careful though... we got Eddie in our camp this time around!

Bring it on!!

PS Personally I feel this is not going to happen... Australia would need to fix a later match cos if they lost the Wales one on purpose, they then run the risk of being out of the World Cup if they get surprised by Fiji or Canada... unlikely but are you as a team going to risk that happening?

By Luway - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Also unlikely on the basis that they would not wanna be known to be throwing matches and more importantly, you don't want to send messages to the other teams (like NZ and Eng) that you're scared to play them.

By BigWelshRich - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Hey ! Bring it on ! That's Wales' easiest route to the semi's.
But why would anyone want to play the Bokke at any time.
Can't see it myself. Playing England in the 1/4's is a gimme, even for Wales. No-one would avoid that opportunity on purpose other than trying to avoid the AB's in the semi's.

With all what we think of the Aussies (which is absolutely warranted!), if there's anything the Wallabies hate more than playing fair--it's losing.

I seriously doubt the Wallabies would throw a match--any match--even if it would mean a more favourable draw for the quarters.

That said, I have no doubt in my mind that the Aussies have already thought of this scenario--and why wouldn't thay? Who hasn't really? So many top athletic competitions are played as pooled trournaments; it's crossed my mind more than once. It's almsot trivial in that respect!

Honestly, I'd say this piece is nothing more than mere sensationalism, or conspiracy theory, pre-fed in the off chance of a Welsh upset. If anything can be said about this possible situation, it is just this:

The Wallabies--knowing that whatever happens in the Welsh match, they're in a win-win situation--are going to be under far less pressure going into the last round of the pool stage of the competition. What we'd probably see, is Coach Connolly pulling most of his first-string players so they'd be rested and injury-free, come the All Blacks.

bollocks!

By mampara - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
i had thought about it, but it does'nt make a lot of sense...they play Eng., NZ, SA...or they play SA, Arg, NZ...what is the difference plus the indignity of throwing a game, but would it surprise me, not at all with the Ozzy

By trixta - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
You are kidding guys; Aussie's hate losing, one of the reasons you mob hate us. Brazendaze, think back to when your full strength team last played us, (on home soil), it took two magnificent field goals to win. Great to see confidence in your own team, but I don't think you are that far in front of us. As for playing england, they are not in the same league as Aussie, SA, or New Zealand.
Playing the welsh at Cardiff, no, there is too much pride at stake, the welsh have given us a touch up there the last two times.....the boys will want to win this one.

By tarr - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
come to our land you fatass walla-babies!

By BelizeanBok - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
There is no way that a team will just throw the game at a WC. Do you really think Australia feels more threatend by the poms than by the boks. This is just another cheap shot from them to try and mock us. Hulle is maar net 'n klomp poepholle.

By Warrior - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
hahahah

By slimsim - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I'm actually quite insulted that they would consider the BOKS the "easier" route.

By wino - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
In theroy, winning a competition means that you would have beaten every other team to get there (no matter what the route). And to be honest, I'd rather face an All Black side in the finals too. But throwing games is NOT the sporting way. Reckon the IRB should look into it as a potential lose of income for those games and cite the ozzies if they smell a rat.

Me thinks the Ozzies are starting their usual minds tricks, just to put people off. It wouldn't be a world cup without them being up to their shenanigans would it.

By Henrynz - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
lol, soundz like a an aussie to me, you guys dont know how smart these prats are, i live in their country so id know...

By Henrynz - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
There are a number of reasons why they would consider it an easier route to the final coz they know how to play the boks, everyone thought that this year in durban the boks were gonna demolish the aussie team, that wasnt even the case, they lost but in all places of the world, durban, those prats came pretty damn close. Or simply they wanna beat the boks coz of eddie jones...

By jaimie - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
oh please
spare us the pre match talk
there simply saying this so if they lose they can say "we planned it all along!"
and if they lose to Wales they have a HARDER path

By mokganjetsi - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
the poms are nothing this year - insane to think the easier road is via the boks. if the wallabies are going to win the cup they will have to face the kiwis in any case - either in the final or semis. they are probably the team with the best chance to bring down the kiwis.

By strim - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
that ridiculous, not the article its acaully quite interesting but the wallabies idea of playin the boks would be better for them than the poms. wat a joke!! i dont care how often we play them (and beat them more than not byt he way) we are clearly a stronger team than england not to add that in that quarterfinal i can almost garentee a player called Schalk Buger will go out ALL GUNS BLAZING and he will win that game for the springboks no matter who they play.

but if the aussies wana play us fine but theyll all be out of a job when they arrive home after not going further than a quarter final and a good thrashing from the soon to be named 2007 RWC finalist and possibly champion SPRINGBOKS

By crazynutter - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Which of these paths is easier for Oz:

SA ARG NZ or.....

ENG NZ SA

NZ is tougher opposition for them , option 1 gets them a final and is easier if they beat SA. I think they may throw it.

By worldcup95 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
The kiwis are going to lose to France in the quarters any way!!!
If aussies top there pool:
1/4: England
1/2: France
1/1: Boks

If they come second:
1/4: Boks
and they ain't going any further than that Razz

By Peso - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Now that's typical of Losers - Aussies - Sissies. Sad

By pharmboyz - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
When we lose against England, it will have been on purpose, too!

By Butu98 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
As I write this I am still basking in the beautiful warm glow that comes from burying England. Just wondering if the Wallabies still think that they would rather meet the Boks ahead of england in the semis.

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Nah they saw the poms last night. Lost case.

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Would love this semi's

NZ vs Aus
SA vs Arg

Hope the SH can do it!
