The Cape Argus is reporting a rather bizarre set of events which may have led to Derick Hougaard’s withdrawal from the Currie Cup Final.
Hougaard, the former Springbok flyhalf, had to be taken-off 90 seconds into the second half of the game after sustaining an injury.
In his article, the paper’s Dale Granger writes, “Dramatic video footage of Saturday's Currie Cup final showing Blue Bulls captain Gary Botha putting the boot into flyhalf Derick Hougaard has raised questions over whether Hougaard's injury was inflicted by his own team-mate.”
Before the incident, Hougaard was playing badly. He’d missed a number of easy penalty opportunities and had failed to spark his backline into life.
“Initially it had been thought that Cheetahs prop Jannie du Plessis's tackle on the pivot had inflicted the injury. However, closer inspection of the footage shows Botha charging into a ruck on the Bulls tryline and stamping heavily on Hougaard,” adds Grangers.
“Footage shows that Du Plessis and Kabamba Floors are quick to smother Hougaard, who goes to ground and is turned on his side. While Floors is fighting for the ball Botha arrives at the ruck. The hooker stands over Hougaard, lifts his knee up to his chest, hesitates momentarily, as if taking aim, and brings his boot heavily down on Hougaard's shoulder area.”
“As Botha's boot strikes, the ball has been won by Floors. Tellingly, there is not a Cheetahs player within range of Botha's boot.”
SARugby.com find the claims highly unlikely and Gary Botha has utterly denied the paper's allegations. The Vodacom Blue Bulls are said to be seeking legal advice over the matter.
With thanks to the Cape Argus

Like Barter says he would only have to ask for him to be taken off...If u ask me he faked it a bit to be taken off before he has to leave at the end of the gam and have hard hats with bull horns thrown at him cause lets face it....HE WAS K@K
I've accidently stood on team mates before, and i find it very unlikely that Botha would do it.
Come on, lets beat Boots&All to it! Someone upload!
To be fair tho, the newspaper rugby writers here in the Cape, Dale, Gavin Rich (especially), etc. do really suck and I'm a WP boy so i wouldn't read to far into it... altho for once Dale, might just be onto something!!
Dale Granger, what a d!ckhead!!!!!
I'll eat my words if there is conclusive proff...
Its complete W@NKER$ like this Granger guy that make me question the capacity of most of our sports writers!!!
He must be fired if there is no proof!!!
Hope Gary takes him to the cleaners.
...I'm sure the Bulls would love a new tackling bag!
Ur comment on the Tsunami thing,is the dumbest thing i've read in years.
This (edited) is typical Cape Town gossip. They always start some (edited) story down there and gets every 1 (edited)ed off. DALE=dick, (edited), (edited), (edited)head, (edited).
The story that (still hasnt been proved) Geo Cronje didnt want to share a room with Davids was also started down there. allegedly by Bolla Conradie
Why look for legal council this quickly if it's crap.
You should remember to take that little red pills with your breakfast each morning.... Its not good for your health and safety if you forget.
What is wrong? You seem so not sunny!!. Is it because your precious province are the only major union that couldnt play in a final for the last five years? Or perhaps that your archenemy played in all of them!!
In each game there is stamping. At least he didnt hit him with a fist(Krige on Andre Pretorius), or stepped on his ankle after he scored a trie(Slaptjips on Andre Snyman). These things happen, its a contact sport.
As for province, our time will come again, as it has always been Tthat way. Average age of 23, we will be back.
Hey Stef, one thing is for sure, a good rivalry amongst all CC teams is good for SA rugby.
Sunny, is sunny again
I hate the bulls just like you guys but why is it that the Stormers are gonna play in blue next year???
It must be a bitter pill to swallow. But you guys down there know all about that now dont you
