South African fears have been realised – Jeff Wilson has decided to return to rugby.
The former All Black winger – one of the greatest to grace the game - is to take up a wide-ranging coaching and developmental role with the Otago Rugby Football Union.
The 32-year old Wilson retired from all rugby in 2002. He will now relocate back to Dunedin from Canterbury and begin work as a rugby development co-ordinator.
According to the official New Rugby website, will work with elite and amateur players and his role will include individual skills coaching, talent identification and development and player mentoring. He will also be available to assist when required with the Otago and Highlanders coaches.
Russell Gray, chief executive of Otago rugby, told the website, “Jeff’s qualities and abilities are well known and it’s great for Otago rugby and the Highlanders region in general that he will be involved.”
“People such as Josh Kronfeld, John Leslie, John Timu, David Latta and others are already involved at various levels and in various roles,” Gray said. “Jeff is a special person and brings special skills.”
Wilson, who also played cricket for New Zealand, said he was thrilled to be returning to Otago rugby.
“Having been away from the game a few years now, I’ve gone beyond the ability to play it. It’s fantastic that I can now return to Otago and hopefully assist a new generation of players.”
