Stormers blow away the Hurricanes
Saturday, March 13
A clinical Stormers side blew away the Hurricanes to record a comprehensive 37-13 bonus point win at Newlands on Saturday.
The Cape-based franchise again displayed their unrivalled defence and moved up to second place on the log while the ‘Canes dropped down to seventh.
Joe Pietersen slotted a penalty in the opening minute after the ‘Canes were penalised for having runners in front of the kicker.
The visitors made a costly error in trying to run it out of their own 22m when a turnover led to the opening try by winger Sireli Naqelevuki, who continued his good form in a man of the match performance.
After missing his first attempt at goal, Hurricanes flyhalf Willie Ripia put the visitors on the board with a penalty in the 19th minute. The ‘Canes would have to wait until the 66th minute to add to their tally whilst the Stormers scored tries through Duane Vermeulen and Pietersen to take a commanding 17-point lead into the break.
Half time: Stormers 20-3 Hurricanes
The ‘Canes were desperate to score early in the second stanza and strung together several phases which finally created an overlap, but Tamati Ellison spilled the final pass. In the 52nd minute, big Brok Harris looked to have powered his way over the line from a pick and drive but the replay showed him to be short.
Moments later, Peter Grant charged down a kick from his opposite number Ripia, gathered the ball and set off for the line. He was brought down a metre short but Harris was on hand to scoop up the ball from the ruck and this time the tighthead was not to be denied.
The ‘Canes were relentless on attack and managed to put together 16 phases in one particular sequence. Their resiliency finally paid off when winger David Smith rounded off to score the visitors’ first try.
Following a penalty from Pietersen, replacement hooker Deon Fourie nearly scored his second try in as many weeks, only to be held up over the line, before namesake Jaque Fourie cut back inside from the next play and dot down despite being tackled by three men.
With a minute remaining, the ‘Canes regained possession after the restart and replacement scrumhalf Tyson Keats scored a soft consolation try.

Bulls 1st and Stormers 2nd on the log!!!
Well done team, great discipline, great defense and great attack.
Proud of this win against a quality NZ team.
great stuff boytjies. we stil making to many silly mistakes but hey im freaken happy !!!!
lekker stormers lekker man!!!!!
Yet another stirling performance by Naqelevuki? If this is a dream then I never want to wake up!
I hope the Bulls and especially the Stormers can keep their respective runs going as much as possible, just think of this scenario:
Week 14, the best attacking side (Bulls) VS the best defensive side (Stormers) of the comp, it will be the game of the year!
Juan looked really good though, he left Nonu for dead a couple of times!
He should make the "TEAM OF THE WEEK" easily !!
Congrats, from Bulls country
Jack, that will truly be the game of the year, just a pity the Stormers will win @ Newlands and not on Loftus. Would've been funnty to see all those Hill-billies crying!
Thi team just looks so focussed. Before every scrum they get so pumped and so after every defensive effort.
Great win Stormers.
The Slowcanes were completely blown off the park by the storm!
Go the Bulls!!!
P.S - Jacque Fourie is a monster! Does look like he lost some weight..?
Having said that, I congratulate the Stormers for a defensive effort second to none. Awesome stuff.
Bulls Stormers in the final at Loftus... Yes Please !!!!
Must say I am a little nervous about our defence, the Bulls could learna thing or two from the Stormers.
kiwis ALWAYS get away with Murder unless they playing against Poms or Lions....
Stormers showed a really good overall performance, they are not lacking in defence or in the ability to create point scoring opportunities from any point of play backs or forwards!
Just a thought, as so many were saying that you cannot gauge a teams form on these warmup games.
GO STORMERS!!!!!!!
PS Please observe how quiet the KIWI birds have become.
and guns, between friends, that's not nice
