SA Team of the Week - Round 4

Tuesday, March 09 After the horrors of Round 3 the South African sides bounced back in Round 4 with two good wins for the Stormers and the Cheetahs and two narrow losses for the Sharks and Lions in Australia.  To make things even sweeter the Bulls managed to stay top of the log despite having the week off.

Let's take a run through the team selected.  Stefan Terblanche put some indifferent performances behind him with a solid game for the Sharks in Sydney and narrowly kept out Hennie Daniller who was also in good form in Bloemfontein.

Lionel Mapoe and Bryan Habana make up the back three with Sireli Naqelevuki ineligible for a SA Team of the Week.

Springbok centre Adrian Jacobs showed that he's far more at home at outside centre and slides into the midfield alongside Meyer Bosman who sunk the Hurricanes with a pin-point display of long-range kicking.

Peter Grant gets the nod ahead of Naas Olivier at flyhalf and he's accompanied by his Stormers halfback partner Dewaldt Duvenage.

In the front row there were some difficult selections to make with WP Nel, Adriaan Strauss and Wicus Blaauw just edging out the Stormers pairing of Brok Harris and Deon Fourie who would be equally at home in the starting line-up, but have to make do with a spot on the bench this week.

Nico Breedt continued his good form this season with a hard-hitting outing for the Cheetahs and he's in the SA Team of the Week alongside Andries Bekker in the second row.

The loose trio just about picked themselves with Schalk Burger, Juan Smith and Ryan Kankowski all putting in stand-out performances.  Francois Louw takes the spot on the bench.

KANKO! Where is GENERAL? AKA I hate Kanko.

By bullinwp - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Looks very 'thin' without the Bulls

By brettroux - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
bullinwp i agree, and im a sharks man

By brettroux - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
deon fourie was better than strauss, i think he was top no.2 for the weekend across the board...

"kankowski plays a very good game at club level, unfortunately he cant cut it at the springbok level so too Tereblanche and Jacobs."

That conclusion wise @ S S.

By BoknBull - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Agreed "bullinwp". Sort of an Emerging bok side Laughing

Must say, kankowski plays a very good game at club level, unfortunately he cant cut it at the springbok level so too Tereblanche and Jacobs.

Deon Fourie, amazing performance, he was everywhere at the same time much like Burger. Very impressed with the Stormers. Just need to work on their BMT and they could challenge the Bulls for the title Idea

How do you come to that conclusion boknbull??

By BLOUBULINCPT - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
crazy shark easy the bull and the stomers is the only two teams in the country playing well. the lions is getting back to their form and so is the cheethas. the sharks well they are going to have more int. players in their teams then a world xv.

By cramer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I think Kanko played much better last week. I always feel that he never combines well with other loose forwards or even forwards.

Wow. I never thought I'd say it to a Sharks fan but there is nothing wrong with Kanko at international level. He needs to calm himself down and think about things a little more.

He also needs to work on holding on to the ball in a tackle. He does spill a bit to much ball for a loose forward. Not getting down on him cause I think he's good but Spies is so much better.

It's like the difference between Dan Carter and Stephen Donald. Donald is good but the problem is he's compared to a super star. Kanko won't ever be as good as Spies.

Kanko is the form SA S14 forward in my opinion... he has had big games in almost all his outings... and I hate the Sharks!!

Thought Fourie was easily the best SA hooker on the weekend.

By proooooovince - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
The Bulls and the Stormers both still have to on tour, lets not count our chickens..

By BullsRob - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
If you look at last years form the Bulls did quite well on tour last year.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I like Deon Fourie, almost like Schalk Brits just heavier. Once again.. Hookers and Loosies in abundance in SA.

I agree BullsRob. Spies is top choice but Kanko is a brilliant backup.

By youliedtometappe - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Strauss was immense. Possibly a bit lucky to beat Fourie, but he also did some amazing stuff.

By zulustormer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
kanko is good 4 only 1 thing and thats playing in the backline. Whenever the game is tight kanko goes jolling in the backline leaving his fellow forwards outnumbered. Some1 said that kanko should play centre. I agree. Imo alberts should play 8th man and kanko 7 with deysel at 6. That loose trio looks good but not as good as burger, flow and vermeulen.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Ah man don't get me started! Evil or Very Mad

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
oh geez. there they go again with Ryan in the backline. Just like Schalk, Matfield and the rest of them. Ryan had a bad year last year. I will be the first to admit it. He did not get opportunities in the Bok setup - expect in the EOYT and he like alot of the other players were off form.

But in 2008 he was S14 player of the year. And looks like he is getting back his form this year.

Regarding his handling. Go and have a look at last years stats. Spies handling errors were WAY more than Ryan's.

By Stormer10 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Look at how many tackles Kanko made last weekend.

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Where you get the stats this year Stormer10? I remember last year his tackles missed was also way less than Spies.

By bullinwp - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
We ALL agreed on this site last year that Spies is no 1, but as the Malhaai so correctly stated; Kanko is a brilliant back up. I rest my case! Cool

By bluebok - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
They are very different players, Kanko is brilliant in open games, Spies is good in tight games, the real difference between them is that Spies in space is just as good as Kanko, and probably faster in a straight line, but Kanko is nowhere in a tight game, and that is what sets them apart.

Ps. Spies is MUCH better on defence than he used to be, at least as good a Knako.

By aasvoel - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Spot on bluebok. And rugbygal: Why bring Spies into this when the debate is about Kanko and the backline??? Rolling Eyes

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
read all the comments aasvoel. they talking bout his bad handling and tackling. just pointed out that spies also makes mistakes and last year Ryan's stats in the S14 were way better.

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Kanko ALWAYS plays amazingly at S14 and CC level...infact he is usually the best no8 in both those tournaments...BUT he still has not made any impact at int. level and thats where you compare the best of the best. If you people wanna talk about Wynand being a class act at club level but pretty average at int level (which is true) then you gotta use that same arguement for Kanko...?!

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Well last year Spies was infact the best no8 in the S14 (he was a behemoth at times)...not Kanko...but Kanko is by far the most consistant in the s14 and cc.

By sebastienchabal - Castle Braai recommendations: 1
Absolute nonsense both Pierre and Rian are outstanding no 8's, I agree, in different scenarios but we need them both. Kanko will however push beyond this level with maturity....just observe!!

By generaal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Actually Spies goes quiet in tight games as well.

By RagingBull - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
OMG - The Kanko Spies debate again, i though we were over this.

Gareth - Can we please bracket next to the players name the number of times they have been picked in the SA Team or the Team of the week.

Should be like a sort of Bokometer.

By greenblud - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Look what kills me is if Spies were named as the SA no 8 of the week, you wouldn't get Kanko fans dropping derogatory remarks like Kanko's good for Club but not Springboks, I'll openly admit Spies was the better 8 last year, no need to slate him. Now because he's on form. Get over it already, if the players are there good for them.

By sebastienchabal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
This is contradiction RagingBull... we will never "be over this" if your "Bokometer" is introduced.......what the hell are you trying to prove?
I am sure Pierre and Ryan both have the greatest respect for one another.......afterall they have individual styles of play.....SA rugby should be both proud and grateful to have such awesome no 8's.Lets not divide the issue.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
HAHA I love the Spies-Kanko debate cause all Bulls know its closer than what they are comfortable with. All I know is Kanko has been having a better super14 than Spies so far. And Kanko is in the LOSING team.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0

haha some guy wrote that on the spoert24 website.. Found it quite funny.. Very Happy

Yes CSM, its easy to shine when playing with a bunch of out-off-form players, like Joost did about 10 years ago for Bulls. Not that I'm saying the Sharks are that bad now. When almost all the players like in the Bulls camp are in top form, its hard to stand out in that great crowd. I guess you can look at it both ways.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Yeah I guess so but Spies is such a good player that he should be way more prominent in such a "on the front foot pack". And i don't completely agree that its easier to shine in a pack thats on the backfoot the whole time.

By aasvoel - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Yes, but I'm talking about the whole team. It's easy to spot a strawberry between a bunch rasberries. But anyway, I think Spies will get better with every game now. And lets hope the Sharks can get some motivation from Kanko.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Yeah I agree. Hope they can build some momentum. I wanna see Spies ON FIRE! Damn its entertaining to see him sprint full speed.

By Javelin - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Yeah. Kanko's try was also brilliant the weekend. Bugger, put him at 7, with Spies at 8. Now that covers our attacking options. And contrary to popular belief, both can tackle better than most, so our defence is sorted.

By sebastienchabal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
What happens to Brussow or Burger, only one space left........impact players?

By sebastienchabal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Sorry and Juan Smith, when Brussow recovers........We have 3 outstanding flankers and 2 brilliant no 8's.........This is depth...not a problem...just depends how you use them in alternate games.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Plenty depth indeed. I'd like to see Kanko and Spies on the same ball park playing together.. Could be lethal!
