Bulls name strong side for opener

Tuesday, February 09 Fourteen players that represented the Vodacom Bulls in the final of last year’s Super 14 competition, will again front up for the men in blue when they kick off their 2010 campaign against the Vodacom Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Friday August 12th.

Victor Matfield will lead an experience bunch of players on the field, with all 22 having had Super 14 experience.  There is a comeback for Gary Botha, who last played for the Bulls in the 2007 final and to make his return more special, Botha will play in his 50th match for the Bulls.

Matfield expressed his delight on Botha’s return.

“Gary is such a great team man. He is also a very strong leader and brings plenty of experience with him. His input about our scrumming will hopefully also help us to improve in that department.”

Jacques-Louis Potgieter, who last played for the Bulls in 2007, Bees Roux and Flip van der Merwe are former Cheetahs players that will challenge their former team from the bench.

Coach Frans Ludeke was quick to point out though that none of them brought any trade secrets from Bloemfontein, especially Potgieter, who starred for the home side last year.

“The local teams know each other so well by know, there is actually not much to tell. The Cheetahs and Bulls always seem to bring out the best in each other, as was seen in the last couple of years. Both want to dominate and that is no secret,” Ludeke said.

He indicated his side will be up for the defence of their title.

“Our preparations went well and we are happy that we will start the competition with the right frame of mind and body.”

Gary is an awsome hooker an i think he wil make a big difference. I feel 4 derick though.he was jus starting 2 get 2 grips with playing hooker and now hes playing flank again. Bulls by 7

very solid and balanced looking team. lets hope they can play some entertaining rugby. seriously not in the mood for that kick and chase crap

that backrow does not look that intimidating.even the midfield is not particularly solid.then of course the back 3 can be challenged.of course they have what matter;#9,goal kicker, lineout king, scrumaging power but it still feels kind of lacking generally

ndir that midfield was the most effective one in last years S14, remember how many tries Olivier scored? I think him and Pretorius are well balanced..

Great team - But they are going to get nailed because of the lack of black players

By zulustormer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
@ ouie.. thats a good observation but lets not bring that transformation crap into our super competition. this is the only competition where we don't have to deal with piet helium and his politition buddy's racist crap.

ANYONE? where is dewet barry??!!

By AUDI88 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
YES,WHERE IS DEWET?

By Terence85 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
De Wet will only be used in the case of an injury crisis. Think JL Potgieter pretty much snubbed De Wet's chances of actually playfor the Bulls.

Crusader Derick Kuun not in starting front row may be a good thing for his career, I think the bulls have someone in the same mold as George Smith in him & Gary Botha is as solid as they come this team is looking pretty good on paper lets see what happens on Friday
