Dreadful draw for BlitzBokke
Thursday, December 17
The Springboks Sevens side’s bid to retain their IRB Sevens World Series title took another knock when they were drawn into the pool of death for the New Zealand leg along with current leaders New Zealand and World Cup holders Wales.
The unbeaten New Zealanders will start on home soil as the top seeds by virtue of winning both the Dubai and South African legs.
The third event of the World Series in Wellington on 5-6 February will see South Africa face New Zealand, Wales and Oceania qualifiers Niue in Pool A.
The defending champion BlitzBokke have struggled thus far and currently lie in eighth place on the standings after twice losing to Fiji in the Cup quarterfinals and twice losing in the Plate finals.
To avoid a possible hat-trick of eliminations from the Cup competition at the hands of Fiji, the BlitzBokke will need to top their pool. The winner of the pool will in all likelihood face Australia, while the runner-up with probably play Fiji, who are expected to win pool B.
African powerhouse Kenya, currently in sixth place, will battle England, in third place, for supremacy in Pool C while Samoa – finalists in Dubai – and Argentina – semi-finalists in George – will square off for the top spot in pool D.
The pools for the NZI Sevens are:
Pool A: New Zealand, South Africa, Wales, Niue
Pool B: Fiji, Australia, Scotland, Papua New Guinea
Pool C: England, Kenya, USA, Tonga
Pool D: Samoa, Argentina, France, Canada
