Waratah Roodt relishing Bulls clash
Thursday, December 03
Former Bulls and Emerging Springbok lock Hendrik Roodt is relishing the opportunity of playing against his mentors Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield for his new franchise the Waratahs in next year’s Super 14.
Roodt signed a two-year deal with the New South Wales Super Rugby franchise in August after he was released by the Super 14 champion Bulls.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports Roodt believes that it will be odd playing against the Springbok lock pairing but said he cannot wait for the opportunity.
"It will feel funny, because they are my role models.”
"I look up to them, but they are also only human made of flesh and blood.
"They have much more experience, but you have to start somewhere.
"It will be a privilege to be able to play against them."
The 22-year-old stands 2m tall and used to weigh 146kg before he started cutting weight.
"I got down to 130kg and am now at 126kg, so I still have a few kilograms to lose. My ideal weight is 121kg," he said.
According to Waratahs coach , Chris Hickey, Roodt's reaction to a possible match up against Botha and company was quite simple.
"He just said, I am also big," said Hickey.
In related news, the Waratahs have retained the services of Wallaby forward Dave Dennis. Dennis, who played in the two midweek matches against Gloucester and the Cardiff Blues on Australia’s end-of-year tour, signed a new two-year deal with the Tahs.
