Matfield to captain Barbarians
Wednesday, December 02
Barbarians coach Nick Mallett has honoured Springbok lock Victor Matfield by naming him captain for Saturday's meeting with the All Blacks at Twickenham.
Matfield is one of seven South African players in the starting XV. Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana, Fourie du Preez, Schalk Burger, Matfield, WP Nel and Bismarck du Plessis all being selected to start against a second-string All Black outfit.
Tendai Mtawarira and Morne Steyn are selected on the bench.
Du Plessis starts up front alongside Italian prop Salvatore Perugini and uncapped Cheetahs tighthead WP Nel.
Carlo Del Fava, Rocky Elsom and George Smith make up the rest of the pack.
The backline has an all-star World XV look to it with Fourie du Preez, Matt Giteau and Jamie Roberts all amongst the best performers in their positions this year.
"To be invited to lead such a star-studded outfit is a huge honour for me. It will also be my debut for the Barbarians and the whole experience since the squad met up last Sunday has been unique." Matfield said.
Mallett was outspoken about his side's chances after a settled training period.
"We have the benefit of a full week together ahead of the match and, knowing the talent that has been assembled among the 22 players, we expect to be very competitive and give the All Blacks and the Twickenham crowd a real taste of Barbarian rugby at its best," he told the Scrum website.

I wouldn't mind seeing some younger loosies and the Italian prop have a run
