Matfield to captain Barbarians

Wednesday, December 02 Barbarians coach Nick Mallett has honoured Springbok lock Victor Matfield by naming him captain for Saturday's meeting with the All Blacks at Twickenham.

Matfield is one of seven South African players in the starting XV.  Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana, Fourie du Preez, Schalk Burger, Matfield, WP Nel and Bismarck du Plessis all being selected to start against a second-string All Black outfit.

Tendai Mtawarira and Morne Steyn are selected on the bench.

Du Plessis starts up front alongside Italian prop Salvatore Perugini and uncapped Cheetahs tighthead WP Nel.

Carlo Del Fava, Rocky Elsom and George Smith make up the rest of the pack.

The backline has an all-star World XV look to it with Fourie du Preez, Matt Giteau and Jamie Roberts all amongst the best performers in their positions this year.

"To be invited to lead such a star-studded outfit is a huge honour for me.  It will also be my debut for the Barbarians and the whole experience since the squad met up last Sunday has been unique." Matfield said.

Mallett was outspoken about his side's chances after a settled training period.

"We have the benefit of a full week together ahead of the match and, knowing the talent that has been assembled among the 22 players, we expect to be very competitive and give the All Blacks and the Twickenham crowd a real taste of Barbarian rugby at its best," he told the Scrum website.

Barbarians:

Salvatore Perugini, Bismarck du Plessis, WP Nel, Carlo del Fava, Victor Matfield (c), Rocky Elsom, Schalk Burger, George Smith, Fourie du Preez, Matt Giteau, Bryan Habana, Jamie Roberts, Jaque Fourie, Joe Rokocoko, Drew Mitchell.

Bench:  Stephen Moore, Tendai Mtawarira, Quintin Geldenhuys, Andy Powell, Will Genia, Morne Steyn, Leigh Halfpenny.

yea seems weird to have so many SA players -could have had like O Driscoll maybe, maybe, Rob Keartney at fullback -one or 2 of the french guys, who have been awsome (one of their loosies in particular)Just to blend it up a bit with a proper world team, not saying cut us out -maybe take 5 of our guys, and thats 3 other spots for france and irteland who have looked good thisyear???? no french players is a sin, as they are barbarian style players in their own right

with so many south africans in the team and following the huge amount of winey whinging from the SA team and fans alike following last weeks game against Ireland they could almost bill the match as THE BOOHOOS v THE ALL BLACKS

Razz

Nalaga is a young winger playing for Clermont, just Youtube the kid, he's a big strong fijian.
Any others who you'd like to see get a run?
I wouldn't mind seeing some younger loosies and the Italian prop have a run
