Preview: Italy v Springboks

Thursday, November 19 The winless Springboks aim to return to their winning ways when they face Italy in the penultimate Test of the season in Udine on Saturday.

It has turned out to be a nightmare end-of-year tour for the Springboks who had an otherwise phenomenal year in which they won the British & Irish Lions series 2-1 and clinched the Tri-Nations title.

Experts such as Springbok fitness and conditioning coach Neels Liebel and sports scientist Tim Noakes warned that it might be one tour too many and with three successive defeats – including two against English club sides – their prediction has panned out.

Equally worrying is the way in which the Boks have been manhandled by their northern hemisphere counterparts. Gurthrö Steenkamp, Chiliboy Ralepelle, CJ van der Linde and brothers Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis have all been left broken up front, while Andries Bekker, who was tipped to start on Saturday, and Schalk Burger add to the Boks’ injury woes.

The main destroyer-in-chief, who sidelined three Boks, is Leicester and Italy tighthead Martin Castrogiovanni. The scrummaging powerhouse put the entire front row of Steenkamp, Ralepelle and Du Plessis out of commission and continued his dominance by adding a few All Black scalps to his hit list last weekend.

However, it has now emerged that Castrogiovanni may have had an unfair advantage at scrum time. Australian referee Stuart Dickinson, who officiated last Saturday’s Test between the All Blacks and Italy, was earlier this week condemned for his officiating by Director of elite referees, Paddy O’Brien.

Scrums have been an utter mess for most of the year and matters were complicated that much more when the IRB instructed referees to crackdown on scrum infringements following a meeting in London last week.

Many believe South Africa have been handled unfairly in the scrums, which has undoubtedly been the biggest concern of the Boks’ game on tour. However, with debutant Wian du Preez in the starting line-up, BJ Botha on the bench and allegations of Castrogiovanni ‘boring in’, Saturday’s clash may well be the turning point for the Boks in this regard.

Adriaan Strauss is a more than capable replacement for the injured Bismarck du Plessis and has been one of the standout performers on tour with his prominent ball carries. Another effective ball carrier, Danie Rossouw, fills in for the injured Schalk Burger, while athletic lock Andries Bekker has recovered from a hip injury in time to fill in for Victor Matfield, who gets a deserved break on the bench.

Along with Du Preez, there are two other uncapped players in the matchday 22 in replacements Jean Deysel and Francois Hougaard. The pair has enjoyed stellar Currie Cup seasons and will certainly not look out of place in the Green and Gold. Somewhat worryingly, De Villiers has stuck with the midfield combination of Adi Jacobs and Jaque Fourie. The duo failed to make an impact against France last weekend, while Wynand Olivier produced the goods for the midweek team.

The Test largely boils down to the referee’s interpretation of the scrums and the players’ ability to regain their confidence. A prime example is flyhalf Morné Steyn, who had his first bad spell for the Boks last weekend. The SA Players’ Player of the Year will be keen to show that he has put the blimp behind him with an improved performance against Italy this weekend.

Key Battle: Front row vs. front row. The emphasis in this Test is on the performance of the players in the scrums and referee Alain Rolland’s officiating of the all-important set piece.

Prediction: The Bok are on a terrible run and look well and truly jaded, but things are slowly but surely looking up. Saturday’s clash will be the turning point of the tour. Springboks by 10.

Yoh Deysel is a machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Twisted Evil

A bit of a mish mash side, I'm glad to see that Beast will get a break but it is still not ideal.

Some of the players in the Starting line as well as on the bench are clearly not the best number 2's.

Ideally I would have liked to see the tight five get a complete break as well as Fourie Du Preez.

By boet - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
castrogiovanni must be licking his lips...

deysel should have started, oliver shuld get a chance

oh a dewald poetgeiter for next bok captain... what a man Very Happy

By forgottenplayer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
at least bakkies could have got a break, danie 4, deysel 7, potgieter 19 and wynand 12 de jongh 22

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
forgotten, danie and bekker haven't been playing too well together for the dirt trackers so i think it would be a bit risky to have them both start against italy. The Boks need Bakkies in the scrums...this is a problem that we seriously need to sort out cause if Bakkies gets injured then we're screwed.

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
potgieter - i scare my kids with his face

By KNECHCLK - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Eish...let's see how this game pans out! I'm tired of taking flak. It's amazing how quickly things can turn around but I think this has been one tour too many. Still, I want to see a convincing win to at least shut the leprechauns up to some extent for next week! Go Bokke! Twisted Evil

By Coolc4t - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
potgieter didnt show much captain skills on thuesday...looked like andries straus took over once things got tight...dewald is still a good player tho

By forgottenplayer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Valid point Gilbert, would have been better to bring Sykes along instead of Hargreaves. I think he might be able to bring a bit of grunt into the scrum if Bakkies needs a break.

By Zulu - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Our chances are seriously hampered with Kankowski and Jacobs in the team as they could only concede penalties or turn over the ball against France but, would far rather see Deysel and Olivier or even De Jongh but lets hope with the new look front row we can achieve some sort of go forward ball come on Boks lets get ourselves sorted here, we all know that 99% of our problems on this tour have been with selection and fatigue and for that we only have Pieter de Villiers to thank, kinda wish that Declan Kidney was right and his job was on the line, maybe Div should be summoned back home to explain his pitiful performances like Jake White had to in 2006.

Dewald Potgieter = a very handsome young man, although his action photos tend to be the stuff that nightmares are made of! Wink

I think a lot of PdV's Springbok coaching career has been a lot of trial and error to find what works and what doesnt. This, in my opinion, is not what a coach of a national team should do. He is a great guy, very entertaining and has managed to achieve A LOT so far...but his success has come from the core of Springboks from 2007 WC. Even the younger guys like Bismarc and Steyn were from the JW era. I think he has proved that he doesnt have the ability to blood new talent...i mean look at Brussouw, he was left out of the squad to play the B+I Lions. It almost seems like he has to take 1 step backwards to take 2 steps forward. Which is fine cause that means we are still successful, but i think if PdV carries on doing what he is doing by not selecting and using talent the right way, then by the time 2011 comes we are gonna have some serious lack of depth in certain positions.

4 very important things need to be done before 2011...
1) Get rid of Gary Gold, it seems no matter who our front row is he'll turn them into back peddlers.
2) Find a proper replacement for Morne and accept that Pienaar is no flyhalf.
3) More depth for the lock department
4)Change the policy on over seas based players

Ma main man Gilbert...i've been reading ur posts in the other articles too and have agreed wif every single one of them. It's like u jus take the words outta ma mouth.

By sasuperman20 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Yeah, some very relevant comments - although (as much as I don't like him,) Adi has taken some very unnessesary and unfair flak, he was one of the few Boks that TRIED to do anything on Saturday. It's easy to point fingers when we are losing but no one seems to be giving any credit to a guy like Rose who was one of the top players on Tues. night. moral of the story: there are a lot of negatives out there, but there are some highlights too

By Limbocraft - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
There is one 'problem' with the boks that's very subtle.

Expected Mentality.

The guys don't have the intensity that they have the whole year and we'd love them too do, but it's thinkable that it's not as important as winning a B&I or trinations tournament, not matter how hard bakkies tells the french his gonne murder them.

This end of year tour carries a weight of .....what..... 10% of the achievements this year or less?, so one should not loose scope.

Some worrying signs - but it's pulled out of order because most people can only see like 5m in front of their face.

By jakid - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Potgieter is a good player but maybe not a good captain, yet.

By jakid - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
O ja,think we should get Os du Randt or Balie Swart to come sort out the front rows.Ours props and hookers at the moment are soft compared to guys like Uli Smith,Jan Lock,Os,Balie etc.

By zulustormer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
@gilbert, i agree with your views. i have been calling for gary gold to be sacked for a while now. but you left out 1 important issue. dick muir.. with him we have a backline that looks stale and predictible. our lack of creativity should be an issue that has to be adressed. you can't coach experience but you surely can help them inhance their vision and their abbility to spot the gap. the latter 2 points is non-existant im afraid. however ,all said and done , i support the boys and is hoping we redeem our good name by thrashing italy.."it takes you a lifetime to build yourself a good name but 5min to drag it through the mud...go bokke give em hell Twisted Evil

By BDAUSSIE - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
HAHA. There is a strong possibility that front row will get chewed-up and spat-out. I just think that Smit should go back to Hooker. On the up side, the boks pack has stood up to much better packs this year , NZ, AUS, FRANCE, LIONS, IMO all have slightly superior packs to Italy so they should be able to handle this. With that said this could be the weakness front row the Boks have fielded in a test this year. Thank god those big lugs, Bakkies and Matfield, are there to stop these guys retreating.

Niggling aside, Boks will get there first win on tour hear. Italy’s national team is kind sad because they do the basics well enough to compete with most teams, but their major flaw is simply a total lack of ability to score points. They don’t know how to play a tight forwards based/defensive game, they cant play a field position / counter attack game, and teams know more than anything they have neither the will nor the ability to play a run game.

Italys one saving grace in my opinion is aussie Craig Gower. Those of you that have watched any NRL in the past will know that Craig is a genuine attacking player, has a decent kicking game, and can lead a team around the park. I have watch this guy play for Italy a few times now, and while he creates the odd chance, it is pretty clear that the rest of his team have no idea how to play off him. If the players learn to play around him over the next year or so they could actually create a backline that can score points. Until then they will have to settle for scraps.

Expect tries from Fourie and Habana. Brussow to have a field day. Boks by 10+.

By General_Mc - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Gilbert I think whilst you might be right about Gary Gold its not fair to say De Villiers can't blood new talent. I can see why he was reluctant to choose a small debutant who had one great season straight over Schalk Burger who nearly had 50 caps and was far more suited to the physical lions battle.

He has brought through the Beast, Bekker, De Jongh, Potgieter, Morne Steyn, Kirchner etc. The reason it has been hard for most of these players to break in to the team is that he was taking over a world cup winning team whereas Jake was taking over a bunch of crap old farts so it was easy to get the talent in.

Having said that Jake should be commended for pulling some rabbits out of the hat e.g. Habana and Burger

By BaDGer1 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
They should have brought in Derick Kuun. .

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Kuun? gaan laat jou kop lees. Adriaan Straus is damn good.

By Rqd2 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Strauss, Kuun and Liebenberg are all about on a par...

By riskonaught - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Hahaha, again this is so funny. When we were winning everybody was silent, agreed with the team and coaching staff. Now suddenly it's all wrong. In 1 sentence it's being said that the season is too long an players must be rested an in the other moaning about losing an team selection, coaching etc. If we going to rest our best players then of course the coach needs to bring in new blood, but no one will ever agree on who that should be. Every one of the players there deserve their chance, so let them have it an if they don't prove themselves they can't say they never had their shot. Lastly this rubbish about fatigue, yes for the main team, but the dirt trackers hav only played CC an S14, so they can't use that excuse. They've been given a chance an haven't taken it. A couple of guys put up their hands which I'm sure all the coaching staff were really looking for.....Unfortunately the media will always hav a full go!

By f.barnard - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Does anyone think kankowski would make a great winger or even outside centre?? he has the hands and pace, knows how to exploit space and his sevens background also indicates that he can do it.

Pls dont go crazy, i am not a fan of playing guys out of position. but i think he might just become a strenght there.

Spies is always gonna start anyway, and i think willem alberts is the future.

Any thoughts?? i know its neva gonna happen, just wanna know if anyone else agrees

By riskonaught - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Oh! an to sasuperman20, I'm glad somebody else feels the same. Everybody played badly against France, but the guys trying to make their way back or into the team get all the Flak. We seem to profile our players, so that they hav a rep before they even hit the pitch.

By Peppers - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
SA by 40 Very Happy i hope..

By bootman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I think PDV is caught between a rock and a hard place. Blooding new talent and winning games. As much as we would all love it, you cannot have both. Next year we should throw all notions of world rankings and 100% win ratios out the window and bring the young talent into the fold. Although I'm not the biggest Rose fan he did show some promise. Bring guys like him, Deysel, Johnson, De Jong, Potgieter and Hougaard into the setup and give them some gametime. If we lose a few in 2010 while building for 2011 then so be it. The other thing is that we have all now seen enough of Pienaar to know that he is no Flyhalf. Get someone else in as backup for Steyn and do it now. That being said, we simply have to beat Italy on Saturday and IMO we have the team to do it.

By Gron - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I still say, keep the 'dirt trackers' team together and have them play a number of games... perhaps even during trinations and CC season. That's the only way to prepare them for WC.

By General_Mc - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Sorry Barnard I don't think its gonna happen

1. Wing is the only way to fill the quota

2. We already have atleast 3 bloody good wings

3. There is a lot more to playing in these positions, particularly centre than just being a fast loose forward. Even if he has clocked something near to Fourie's pace his acceleration and agility won't be the same.

By bootman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
@ Gron. This would be ideal in terms of preparing these guys but on the other hand I think it would have an adverse effect on the CCup. With the regular boks and the dirt trackers out of the CCup, public interest would drop. Supporters come to the games to see top quality players playing top quality rugby. Just think of crowd attendance between boland and the leopards.

By bootman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
........and why would the lions supporters come to the games if they had no Earl Rose to boo.

Gilbert

That is an easy one to answer. I say Give Kanko a chance because the number one 8th man in the country is not available, yes Spies. Olivier doesn’t get a chance because Jacobs is in and has played well for the Boks like against the French, Olivier has never played well in a boks jersey.

And the comments about my Blog name just goes to show how under your skin I am getting and just maybe my arguments are right and you have no better reply?

By gedi - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
cant believe kankowski is still there - the man needs game time for his province to get his confidence back -he is shattered at the moment - he had so little game time all year because he was in the bok squad but not playing had only 1 start i think and hardly came on for a long period when he subbed......he needs to get his fitness back.....he will prob get good again after the mid way point of the super 14 and 5-7 starts.....Godd thing they kept the backline the same -they wiull need a test ,match practise before ireland

By sergio - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
BDAUSSIE ............ some good comments mate , at least you talk sence unlike our Kiwi fraternity, that slagg the boks off like 11 year old schoolboys !!!!

By zulustormer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
our 2nd best back-row in the country is 6(deysel) 7(vermeulen) 8(alberts).. pace, power and grunt. locks 4(nico breedt) 5(sykes) ..you have alot of power and aggresion with these 5 guys .which is what you need in the northen hemisphere. on the bench with potgieter, bekker or francios louw. none of these ouz will let a bok team down ,thats 4 sure. Smile

By theLEM - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
someone as talking about players like kankowski etc not getting any game time while on tour for the boks because they are not in the match day 22, nor playing for their provinces. Why not get them play some club rugby while in NZ & aus?

There scould be some sort of deal made: maybe they can play for the university side of whichever city they are in while on tour. It would increase the crowd attendances for those games (and they need it in aus, especially with the young student crowd all watching auzzie rules etc.)

Meanwhile, the young guys will get to play with an international player and the bok could get game time and have a good ol' jol playing rugga at one of its purest forms... Obviously the same can then be done here with NZ and aus teams.

BRING BACK FRANS STEYN

By Dhirshg - Castle Braai recommendations: 2
EVERYBODY, PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS LOVE AFFAIR THAT OUR COACH HAS WITH ADI JACOBS ? I WOULD RATHER HAVE HEINKE VD MERWE AT INSIDE CENTRE THAN QUOTA JACOBS. ADI SHOULDNT EVEN BE IN THE SQUAD, LET ALONE STARTING 15, AND 4 HEAVENS SAKE - PICK FRANS AND JEAN - ITS A PROFESSIONAL SPORT DAMMIT. IF ALL OUR TOP PLAYERS MOVE TO EUROPE, MUST WE JUST IGNORE THEM AND PLAY A B-STRING SIDE INDEFINITELY ? WAKE UP P DIVY

By bootman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Dhirshg whats with all the Adi hating???? He had a solid game against France and his form seems to be showing an upward curve. Whats wrong with giving the guy a few chances to show his worth. As for bringing Jean and Frans back....what does that say about the state of our rugby if winning or losing depends on two players? Has our test side now become a b string side because these two are no longer there? I think you should wake up fella!!!

By sebastienchabal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Italy is without doubt the most improved side in international rugby. PDV is right this will be no pushover. Gone are the days when the rugby heavyweight rugby nations regarded Italy with little respect and scores were in the 50 pluses. NZ were not that convincing against them and it could have gone much closer. The Bokke are still the greatest side in world rugby but there is burn-out. Bokke beware this could your "Waterloo".

By half-back - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I honestly think that SARU and the South African public should realise that the end of year tour should be utilised as a blooding tour. The results should be of little concern, assessing the new players and trying new combinations should be the focus. The younger players would thrive if the public was behind them regardless of the results.
I'm aware of the obligations to sponsors, and expectations of the European fans, but the senior players need a rest and the coaches need an opportunity to create depth for the next world cup and beyond.
The chopping and changing of the squad, calling up players who play in Europe, while sending others home is a clear indication of the immense pressure the coaching staff are under.
Critique don't Criticize.

By sasuperman20 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I can't honestly talk to people who continually cry about bringing players back...half way through next year we should pretty much have the team that should be built towards the world cup, if a few guys go play overseas until then, that's great, but we all know that they will be back in time. Now is a great time to see how the other guys cope. I honestly don't care about the number one spot. Winning tournaments is what counts, and surely we've done enough of that this year

By shaheen - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Smile the springboks must keep up the good work & must build their squad for 2011 with youngsters & seniors
