Melbourne wins Super 15 bid

Wednesday, November 11 SANZAR has announced Melbourne as the 15th Super Rugby Team to join the competition when expansion occurs in 2011.

An Expert Determination Panel was asked by the SANZAR Executive Committee to decide on the location of the 15th Super Rugby team. The Experts were former Rugby World Cup-winning captain David Kirk and retired New Zealand High Court Judge, the Hon Barry Paterson QC.

The key reasons for the Experts selecting Melbourne over the other applicant, the Southern Kings from South Africa, were:

· The Experts commented that both applicants were able to point to excellent infrastructure support, and both provided sound business plans and financial forecasts, with the support of their National Unions, guaranteeing financial viability.

· The Southern Kings proposal was more advanced with regard to business and financial planning and organization structure and governance. The Southern Kings were also able to point to a strong rugby tradition, a large playing base and presented a stronger case than Melbourne as to their rugby readiness.

· These strengths of the Southern King’s Application did not, however, offset the benefits in geographical location and commercial value to SANZAR (both of which criteria the Experts were asked to place considerable weight on) that the Melbourne Application was able to deliver.

· The 15th Super Rugby team will play in the Australian Conference under the new Super Rugby competition format from 2011. This means they will play both home and away against the other four Australian Conference teams. As a result the Southern Kings would be required to make two crossings of the Indian Ocean in a season. The local derby aspect of matches in Australia, an important issue for generating attendances and broadcasting value, would also have been diluted and it would not have been possible to schedule at least two matches in each country each weekend. In addition having the team resident in South Africa introduces additional costs to SANZAR of around NZ$720,000 per annum.

· The Melbourne Application provided considerably greater commercial benefit to SANZAR than the Southern Kings Application. Evidence was provided that revenue from the sale of broadcasting rights to Australasian broadcasters would be reduced by US$15-20m over the course of a five year agreement should the 15th team be resident in South Africa, with little or no commensurate rise in the value of South African broadcasting revenue.

Congrats Melborne, a truly multi cultural city and I'm sure they will do their best.

Fine by me, dilute the aussie teams some more so we can BANG them.

By junior_bok10 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
jeez thank goodness for that......as much as i wanted to see de wet barry back in the scene i think melbourne deserve this as the kings would have been a politically corrupt joke!!!

and although we have the best club team in the world(bulls), i don't think the lions deserve to be in the super 14!!!.....looking at the NZ squads even the bloody highlanders will probably finish in the top 10!!!

imagine the lions/griquas/cheetahs/leopards put together.....that would be a devastating team!!

By swing-it-wide - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
no surprises here. When it comes to SANZAR, SA always get the rough end of the stick. I wonder where this melbourne team will get players from....

Best possible decision! The S.Kings dont have the quality players YET to be a force in the S14 and they will get beaten badly. They must combine with the Lions? to make them stronger?

By anticommunist - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
We are probably going to lose a few more sa players to Australasia through this decision as they are already spread quite thin for players, not so good in the long run.

this is good news for us! we could never handle another team

By junior_bok10 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
don't think thats going to happen usarugbyfan Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy .....if u knew ur geography you'd know they are other sides of the country!!!.....the border team in the premier division this year wer useless, they have hardly any decent players though lots of good sharks/wp players went to school in the eastern province region!

By Jack - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
SA just dodged a bit of a bullet, we can't afford to field 6 teams, we just don't have the depth...I doubt any of the 3 countries do!

By Samoankiwi - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
good choice, would have been a waste of time putting in anther SA team, when you guys already have three who are struggling. Will be interesting to see where Melbourne will get their players from. Hopefully the get some argies in there, will give them a chance to taste what SH (real rugby) is like and get them ready for the four nations.

By junior_bok10 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
samoankiwi.....the cheetahs genuinely have a chance of being a big gun this year, simply because they have kept hold of most of their good players and for once they have in-form griquas players to choose from!....and the stormers just had a poor season last year, they will have a super 14 squad that will be no worse than the chiefs and blues squad!!!

they were unlucky in the currie cup, and everybody knows the currie cup is the best domestic competition in the world!!!!!..... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

By ThyBulle - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Bleugh... Australian super 14 teams were weak enough, now they've just made them worse. You won't see an Australian team win the Super 14 for the next 10 years now. Idiots

By Samoankiwi - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
well lets hope so aye junior_bok 10 other wise its just going to be another long season for those two teams Very Happy.

I wouldn't say that about the currie cup lol, I would say the top 14 or Gunniess permiership, simply because there are a lot of great SH players playing.

By ThyBulle - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
SamoanKiwi, old washed up SH players play in the NH.

Currie Cup is the oldest competition in the world, also the best.

By Samoankiwi - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
So Jean De Villers and francois Steyn are old and washed up are they? Thought you Saffa's are loyal to your players regardless of where they are? I guess not.

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
The sensible option

By ThyBulle - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Ok, firstly... I assume you live in Samoa or New Zealand... how much coverage of the Top 14 or Gunniess do you get? I think you just don't want to admit that a South African competition is the best in the world... I mean look at the crowds that your final and semi final draw for your Air Nz Cup... did you even get passed the 10 thousand mark?

Secondly, plenty of older SH players go play in the NH.... Or players that couldn't make the top grade in the SH. Only recently have younger guys started to go because they are realizing that they don't have forever to make some money before their bodies get broken down and they retire.

Luckly kiwis can play rugby..As samoankiwi proved they lack the brain power to do anything els Confused

Very fair choice...now its 5 teams a piece.

By RagingBull - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Bring Back the Cats!
Coached by Naka and Muir.
And with enough talent and depth to their disposal they could
end up in the top 8 for sure. To have the Sharks, Bulls, Stormers and Cats each in the Top 10 would do SA Rugby wonders.

Bring in the Kings. Combine them with the core of Griekwas and E.P rugby and fill the voids with all the top 1st division players and fringe Currie cup players. Even if they end up 14th year in year out. These players from 1ste division will go back to their respective teams and provide a bit of international experience to the 1Div. I think it would be good for Ruggies.

By Luway - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I'm glad... a 5th team for SA would've been an embarrassment... with thrashing after thrashing doing no good to the players.

Not sure what we were thinking trying to bid for it. Also, look how the Force have become a team of substance over a short period compared to our perennial underachievers. So I think giving another Aus team the rights was the correct way to go.

By Jack - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Ragingbull, I'll think we'll see a white President in SA (which won't happen again, EVER again) before we see those combos working. Laughing

The Cats didn't work because Free State always got the short end of the stick and as for the Kings combining with Griquas and other teams, that won't work either since they're way too far apart and they'll struggle to work together as well.

It might be good for rugby, but unfortunately people, with their own interests in unions, are involved so it will never happen. A lot of logistical problems as well.

We should just give it time, the Lions & Cheetahs can surely do better and they will in the future and with the Stormers seemingly leaving their prima-donna alter-ego's behind, we just might see a good all round performance from our teams next year.

By ThyBulle - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Don't care how our other teams go, as long as we win the competition. No one remembers who came last. Only the winner of the competition is remembered. So I'd rather have all 4 of our teams at the bottom of the table and win the competition than have all 5 teams being competitive.

By forgottenplayer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I would see RagingBull's plan also as a good solution. And not too unrealistic. With all all the political interference going on in our beloved sport at least a forced recombination of the cats to create a free spot for the kings is possible. I think some 'important' people have invested too much in the Kings' campaign to let the whole thing die.

Am I the only one whose not excited by the idea of the conference system??? Shocked

I really think that it will detract from the spectacle that is Super Rugby, which have teams strong enough to pull upset victories in the strangest ways (such as Reds vs Sharks this year) to keep the competition interesting and spicy.

If I understand the concept correctly, we are basically going to watch a second Currie Cup competition. Where's the fun in that???
Confused

By Blokkies - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Sorry, I meant "who's"... Embarassed

By Pinniebywp - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Two Kiwi's to decide against SA and AUS??? Shocked Why did they waste all this time, all the did in the time is to think up an good reason not to pick the SA team

By Samoankiwi - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
ThyBulle getting a bit angry are we son??? I live in NZ and here we have the rugby channels which shows coverage of all the comps around the world including Currie Cup.

I never said that our domestic comp was better so I don't know why your are comparing the two. The currie cup is good but I enjoy watching the European comps better. Only people that are interested in the Currie cup are saffas.

And peppers don't try and add your 5 cents no one cares what you think, go and season something will you.

By ThyBulle - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
No ones angry, and no ones your son. Okay, well the Top 14 consists of low quality rugby. Ask Victor Matfield, he went there after the 2007 World Cup and came back in 2008 as an almost ruined player.

Magners League and HC are both, obviously filled with NH players... we all see where they are ranked on the IRB rankings...

Springboks are ranked 1 in the world for a reason. I assume you didn't watch the Currie Cup finals? I'm glad you support the All Blacks, so many of your Samoans complain about how they "pillage" your players, Kaino... Jerry Collins and the rest of the tribe.

By Samoankiwi - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
The quality may not be as good as the SH comps thats for sure but its good to see different players playing rather than the same old teams and players.

No I did watch it and didn't really care who won but I still watched it and it was a good game. Your making it sound as if I said the Currie Cup was (edited), which i never did all I said was I didn't think it was the best comp in the world. You guys deserve to be number one there's no doubting that, but we'll just see how next goes aye. As for the islanders complaining about players being pillaged, umm you got that one wrong bud, its everyone else who complain. Kaino and co may have been born in the island's but like so many tens of thousands of islanders all moved to nz or oz for a better life and education. So why play for a country that you have no memory off and have no real ties to you except your parents.

SamoanKiwi

Ask Chris Jack what the Currie Cup is like. He played two seasons for saracens and returned back to NZ saying it was "easy" and not up to standard(The article was in the Australian mail and guardian: June 9 2009). After he played in the Currie Cup he was full of praise saying what a great competition it was and complementing on the high standard.

While I don't agree that NH rugby is easy, it really isn't even in the same league as the CC.

By bringbackrucking - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
swing-it-wide. SA didn't get hard done by.
As someone mentioned it's 5 a piece, surely you didn't
want to put another one of your teams at the bottom
of the table do you?
