Melbourne wins Super 15 bid
Wednesday, November 11
SANZAR has announced Melbourne as the 15th Super Rugby Team to join the competition when expansion occurs in 2011.
An Expert Determination Panel was asked by the SANZAR Executive Committee to decide on the location of the 15th Super Rugby team. The Experts were former Rugby World Cup-winning captain David Kirk and retired New Zealand High Court Judge, the Hon Barry Paterson QC.
The key reasons for the Experts selecting Melbourne over the other applicant, the Southern Kings from South Africa, were:
· The Experts commented that both applicants were able to point to excellent infrastructure support, and both provided sound business plans and financial forecasts, with the support of their National Unions, guaranteeing financial viability.
· The Southern Kings proposal was more advanced with regard to business and financial planning and organization structure and governance. The Southern Kings were also able to point to a strong rugby tradition, a large playing base and presented a stronger case than Melbourne as to their rugby readiness.
· These strengths of the Southern King’s Application did not, however, offset the benefits in geographical location and commercial value to SANZAR (both of which criteria the Experts were asked to place considerable weight on) that the Melbourne Application was able to deliver.
· The 15th Super Rugby team will play in the Australian Conference under the new Super Rugby competition format from 2011. This means they will play both home and away against the other four Australian Conference teams. As a result the Southern Kings would be required to make two crossings of the Indian Ocean in a season. The local derby aspect of matches in Australia, an important issue for generating attendances and broadcasting value, would also have been diluted and it would not have been possible to schedule at least two matches in each country each weekend. In addition having the team resident in South Africa introduces additional costs to SANZAR of around NZ$720,000 per annum.
· The Melbourne Application provided considerably greater commercial benefit to SANZAR than the Southern Kings Application. Evidence was provided that revenue from the sale of broadcasting rights to Australasian broadcasters would be reduced by US$15-20m over the course of a five year agreement should the 15th team be resident in South Africa, with little or no commensurate rise in the value of South African broadcasting revenue.
and although we have the best club team in the world(bulls), i don't think the lions deserve to be in the super 14!!!.....looking at the NZ squads even the bloody highlanders will probably finish in the top 10!!!
imagine the lions/griquas/cheetahs/leopards put together.....that would be a devastating team!!
they were unlucky in the currie cup, and everybody knows the currie cup is the best domestic competition in the world!!!!!.....
I wouldn't say that about the currie cup lol, I would say the top 14 or Gunniess permiership, simply because there are a lot of great SH players playing.
Currie Cup is the oldest competition in the world, also the best.
Secondly, plenty of older SH players go play in the NH.... Or players that couldn't make the top grade in the SH. Only recently have younger guys started to go because they are realizing that they don't have forever to make some money before their bodies get broken down and they retire.
Coached by Naka and Muir.
And with enough talent and depth to their disposal they could
end up in the top 8 for sure. To have the Sharks, Bulls, Stormers and Cats each in the Top 10 would do SA Rugby wonders.
Bring in the Kings. Combine them with the core of Griekwas and E.P rugby and fill the voids with all the top 1st division players and fringe Currie cup players. Even if they end up 14th year in year out. These players from 1ste division will go back to their respective teams and provide a bit of international experience to the 1Div. I think it would be good for Ruggies.
Not sure what we were thinking trying to bid for it. Also, look how the Force have become a team of substance over a short period compared to our perennial underachievers. So I think giving another Aus team the rights was the correct way to go.
The Cats didn't work because Free State always got the short end of the stick and as for the Kings combining with Griquas and other teams, that won't work either since they're way too far apart and they'll struggle to work together as well.
It might be good for rugby, but unfortunately people, with their own interests in unions, are involved so it will never happen. A lot of logistical problems as well.
We should just give it time, the Lions & Cheetahs can surely do better and they will in the future and with the Stormers seemingly leaving their prima-donna alter-ego's behind, we just might see a good all round performance from our teams next year.
I really think that it will detract from the spectacle that is Super Rugby, which have teams strong enough to pull upset victories in the strangest ways (such as Reds vs Sharks this year) to keep the competition interesting and spicy.
If I understand the concept correctly, we are basically going to watch a second Currie Cup competition. Where's the fun in that???
I never said that our domestic comp was better so I don't know why your are comparing the two. The currie cup is good but I enjoy watching the European comps better. Only people that are interested in the Currie cup are saffas.
And peppers don't try and add your 5 cents no one cares what you think, go and season something will you.
Magners League and HC are both, obviously filled with NH players... we all see where they are ranked on the IRB rankings...
Springboks are ranked 1 in the world for a reason. I assume you didn't watch the Currie Cup finals? I'm glad you support the All Blacks, so many of your Samoans complain about how they "pillage" your players, Kaino... Jerry Collins and the rest of the tribe.
No I did watch it and didn't really care who won but I still watched it and it was a good game. Your making it sound as if I said the Currie Cup was (edited), which i never did all I said was I didn't think it was the best comp in the world. You guys deserve to be number one there's no doubting that, but we'll just see how next goes aye. As for the islanders complaining about players being pillaged, umm you got that one wrong bud, its everyone else who complain. Kaino and co may have been born in the island's but like so many tens of thousands of islanders all moved to nz or oz for a better life and education. So why play for a country that you have no memory off and have no real ties to you except your parents.
Ask Chris Jack what the Currie Cup is like. He played two seasons for saracens and returned back to NZ saying it was "easy" and not up to standard(The article was in the Australian mail and guardian: June 9 2009). After he played in the Currie Cup he was full of praise saying what a great competition it was and complementing on the high standard.
While I don't agree that NH rugby is easy, it really isn't even in the same league as the CC.
As someone mentioned it's 5 a piece, surely you didn't
want to put another one of your teams at the bottom
of the table do you?
