No surprises in Bok XV

Tuesday, November 10 The Springbok starting XV to face France in Toulouse on Friday shows four changes from the run-on XV that did duty in the Boks’ final Vodacom Tri-Nations encounter against the All Blacks in Hamilton in September.

Zane Kirchner, who made his debut in the third and final Test against the British & Irish Lions in July, returns at fullback in place of Frans Steyn, who is currently playing in France, whilst at wing, JP Pietersen, who was injured in the first away match of the Tri-Nations in Perth, returns in place of Odwa Ndungane

Centre Adi Jacobs and No. 8 Ryan Kankowski, who were on the bench in Hamilton, have been promoted to the starting line-up in the place of Jean de Villiers (overseas) and Pierre Spies (injured) respectively.

Danie Rossouw and Ruan Pienaar are only other survivors from the bench in Hamilton, with five changes being made. Lock Andries Bekker, who was also injured in the Perth Test, makes a return as does centre Wynand Olivier, who last warmed the bench for the All Black Test in Bloemfontein in July.

Adriaan Strauss, who has played five Tests to date, replaces Chiliboy Ralepelle as hooker reserve and CJ van der Linde takes the place of Jannie du Plessis as tighthead replacement. Loosehead Wian du Preez, who was called up along with Strauss and Van der Linde this week, is also amongst the reserves.

Du Preez is the only uncapped player in the 22. Van der Linde, a veteran of 56 Tests, last played for the Boks in August 2008 whilst Strauss’ last appearance was in July 2008.

“The core of the match did duty during the Tri-Nations campaign and will provide us with stability going into this tough opening Test,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.

“There are a lot of experienced players in the starting XV as well as on the bench which will be important to our continuity as well as to ensuring that we maintain our structures and play the way we want to.

“I have full confidence in the new players who will be starting on Friday, they have shown their qualities before and we have to make sure we get the best out of them. The three newcomers are all good players in their own right. CJ is very experienced whilst both Adriaan and Wian have been part of the squad previously,” De Villiers said.

Just one change, Wynand in for Useless Jacobs!!!!!

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I must be honest I agree. Use the combo thats been working miracles for the Bulls- 9. Fourie 10. Steyn 12. Olivier

By bluebok - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I don't think the rugby surfaces ove there are gonna suit Kanko's style of play, unfortunately I think he is gonna be exposed over there which is sad, cos I rate him, but he needs to play expansive rugby and is not going to perform in a tight game. I reckon they should play Schalk at 8 and put Danie in his place at flank, play Kanko on the bench.

I agree with Nitronic here, Olivier in for Jacobs.

No politics involved this would be my team.

1. BJ Botha
2. J Smit
3. CJ VD Linde
4. Bakkies
5. Matfield
6. Brussouw
7. Russouw
8. Schalk
9. Fourie Du preez
10. Morne
11. Habana
12. Jean De Villiers
13. J Fourie
14. JP Pietersen
15. Stephan Terblanche

16. Beast
17. Bizmark
18. Kanko
19. Bekker
20. Frans Steyn (Can play anywhere in backline)
21. Pienaar (Cover for Scrumhalf only)
22. Joe Pietersen (Can play anywhere in the backline)

Again, if there was no politics and all SA players could be used.

3 props on the bench? Why not just have CJ, he can over both positions. I take it Ruan will cover Flyhalf and Scrumhalf again. Dam shame they don't choose him in position. It is okay for the world cup, but the questions is?

Who is our second best Flyhalf in the Country and who is our second best Scrumhalf.

man that was so close to a near perfect selection.. please can someone tell if I am missing something here, but how and why does AD jacobs still make this squad let alone run on...I know JDV is gone but surely Olivier is better, in fact dujong and probally frikkie welch is better...
Otherwise great team, Kirchner expected, as frans in france...maybe terblanche was a better option but thats not going to happen.

Lets hope AD gets the guthro, chilli and jannie call. to go back home.

By green - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Bluebok, thats a near perfect team with just one exception,Joe Pietersen. Needs to be blooded in against weaker opposition, before he takes the bench.
Hes got too much talent to throw him in at this level, against the likes of France. Perhaps baby Boks first and then blood him in, what a future prospect.
Anyway that team is a dream team. We can only dream about it.

Look foward to Friday night...Viva La Bokke!

blue bok... No Spies in your line up???? did you miss him out or are you unwell???
the rest is great....

By aasvoel - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I agree with Mike

By barter - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
this is a great side, but i'm concerned because the french can really turn in on when they want to. Why did we stay in SA so long - surely we're at risk of being in a comfort zone?

By drenomics - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I am worried about Zane Kirchner.........(1), not that he is a bad player but undercooked

But when I see our back row, lossies wings plus morne and fourie i have great hope!

Go bokke

By bluebok - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Spies is injured, else he would be an obvious starter.

By bbvb - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
We dont need any magic from Kirchner only stabilty. He only needs to tackle, catch and kick. The rest of the side is there to create opportunities and tries.
I rate this side and think it should do the business against the french.

By guns - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Game is at 10pm SA time?

By bluebok - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Kirchner has the right stuff I believe. People can say that he doesn't, but seriously, he has held his nerve in S14 finals and Currie Cup finals to take home some pretty impressive medals. It can probably be argued that Test matches are more intense, but really, the S14 is rugby of the highest quality and he did just fine.

Kirchner will be fine as will the most successfull rugby side in history.

Boks on top!

Gareth Rosslee,

Thanks for the quick response. We appreciate that you share this information with us.

By drenomics - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Yes Kirchner must just hold his nerve

By Gron - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Du Preez played in so many Emerging Bok and Bok XV games, it is almost unforgivable that he still has a zero for test caps.

By Gron - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I think the only change I would have preferred would be having Johnson instead of Rossouw, but I guess the 'experience' played a role.

By Gron - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Ack! What am I saying? Ruan shouldn't be there after last week!

15 Zane Kirchner (1)
12 Adi Jacobs (28)

Game looser!!!! take them out and i'm 100% behind the team...

By MarkB - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Frans Steyn - Zane Kirchner
Jean De Villiers - Adi Jacobs
Pierre Spies - Ryan Kankowski
Jean Smith - Schalk Burger

That surely is a weaker Bok team! Crying or Very sad

By FrikkieLeeu - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I second bluebok!!

By zulustormer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
not a bad side. i think kirchner will keep it cool, really. he must just do the basics right and he will be fine.im a bit worried about kanko cos we all know that when the game gets tight, kanko goes missing. however when he got the ball and sum space he can be awesome. adi is gonna be exposed in this game. the french centre pairing is inexperienced but huge 100kg boys. Very Happy ole le green

By FrikkieLeeu - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
great point zulustormer... and we all know adi can't tackle for (edited)...

By theLEM - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
llok, im not a big fan of kirchener but, he does do well at S14 and CC level so im willing to give him a few caps to learn the ropes. There are very few (Heinrich Brussouw and Morne Steyn being the obvious exceptions) players that impress on debut, or even in their fist couple of games. Lets see what happens. My Feeling is that he will be sufficient, but not much more than that...

By Peppers - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Ugh Zane Kirchner is an idiot..why not take Stefan Terblanche his been the best 15 in sa for the last 2years,building for the world cup is crap bet Jean and Frans wil be in the team come 2011

By Nitronic - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Adi Jacobs is the only possible weak link! I think this is his last chance and also maybe Pienaar's last chance. Although would still prefer Wynand, or even De Jongh, hell even Earl the pearl would be more usefull than Adi.

By omacburma - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
what are you guys smoking?

Oliver has NEVER played well for the boks. do you remember the lions 3rd test, the 9-13 was the same (with oliver) and they didn't score a try. oliver (like ruan, i'm afraid) hasn't shown he has it in him for test level.

Adi was one of the better players last year for the boks, and back when foure was injured, few people said anything. give this new center combo a chance.

if you want to start blasting players, how about kanko? what has he ever done with the boks? he isn't any good in the norhtern winter weather.

its a not as good a 15 as in the tri nations, but under the laws regarding non-local players, its the best.

now lets get those cheetahs props in early should we struggle in the scrum...

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Kanko will be fine. This his turn to show us what he can do. Spies goes missing in a tight game just as much! His first tour to the UK in 2007 he was the best of the lot!

By Jack - Castle Braai recommendations: 1
That's what happens if you tour with the 4th/5th stringers in the country, you can't afford to include them for the internationals because they aren't good enough.

The only guy from last weeks game who deserves a call up is Johnson, since he had a blinder, but the rest was awful! Danie Rossouw was nowhere & Johnson should've been rewarded for his fine form & included on the bench! Confused

As for Ruan Pienaar, uhm, how he's even able to make the bench is beyond me! He was terrible on the weekend and frankly played far worse than South Africa's Piñata (Earl Rose) on the day. It's shocking actually, that PDV said after the Tr-Nations that he still believes that Ruan Pienaar is better than Morne Steyn and that if he can get his kicking up to Morne's level he'll be the first choice nr 10. Firstly, Ruan will NEVER, EVER achieve that and secondly, Ruan might be all flashy on the training pitch but he hasn't delivered these Tiger Woods-ish skills on game-day & something has to be said for Morne's phenomenal B.M.T. which seems to be going unnoticed...something which any great coach will tell you is far more valuable than the odd side-step!

They should've left Ruan at 9 where he was damn good before PDV & Co tried to mold him into something different.

Criticism aside, I really hope Zane & Kankowski each have a good game and that we bang the french on home soil! I don't know about you guys, but it's been far too long since a french team has been booed by their own supporters?! Laughing

By Jack - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Confused? Laughing? I've been robbed of my smileys! Smile

By Vaste6 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
This is a good side. Although the combination of Kanko and Brussouw is on the light side vs Juan and Spies.

The 10 and 12 combo is a bit weak on defense, lets face it Morne is no Butch and that 110kg centre might cause a bit of problems in the midfield.

Sharks are fresh from their break, Bulls are on a high and the Cheetahs always work hard. Should be our game for the taking.

By sbudaluda - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Joe Pietersen played well in the CC, Maybe if Pieter de Villiers can start watching all the games and not just the Bulls games he will see Joe Pietersen as a good fullback that can kick well and he can also handle presure. Hear me well people i'm not saying Zane is not good for the position but we also need Joe Pietersen in the squad.
And i'm not quite sure about Jacobs but lets give him a chance peolpe.

By junior_bok10 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
how can anyone defend jacobs?????.....he has had worse games then olivier and a few better ones but jacobs has had more chances due to the colour of his skin unfortunately!

everyon knows that wynand was the prime bok centre in this years super 14, he outclassed intl centres like barnes, nonu, smith and quade cooper!!!!

zane kichner is a great player and will be a good bok in 2-3 years, why hennie daniller wasn't chosen is beyond me!....he is a huge player who suits the bok kicking game and can clear up jacobs' missed tackles!!

By anticommunist - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Stefan Terblanch for Kirchner, watch Kanko shine.

By rugby-man - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
good team but put jacobs on the bench for olivier as hes a fairly good impact player

By USARugbyfan - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Stephan will never be selected right now-he is too old!! I have really seen some amazing selection "wishes" in these posts!!!
Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing :mrgreen:The best side was selected-
With one or two exceptions-My "wish" The Lions 12 for Adi- I cannot find a better 15 right NOW but after more experience I think Peterson and Viljoen maybe good enough.

By jauk - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
If anyone rates Wynand Olivier, then I take it you rate Gio Aplon aswell, seeing that Aplon sailed pass him in the semi's to score a try?

Front row is worrying, at least we have backup in CJ.
The channel 10 and 12 is worrying...but we have Schalk.
Zane Kirchner will be fine he's got habana and pietersen next to him.
I think we will be just fine.

By junior_bok10 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
jauk.....gio aplon has incrdible acceleration and he would have smoked jacobs in a similar situation!!!!

unfortunately i think if victor was a better captain.....john smit might not even be in that 22!!!!......the oke is a legend but cj is better prop and beast is a machine!!

kirchner will be alright, though joe pietersen would have been a better choice!

By Vlagman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Good bench, clear indication with 2 props on the bench that we want to take them upfront.

Gonna be a tough 1st half I think, but once again the Boks will triumph with superior discipline and take their oppertunities when presented.

By General_Mc - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I'm really looking forward to Jacobs proving everyone wrong. It's really sad to see so many people get on his back. Apart from perhaps the game against the Lions I can't think of a single time he has let the team down.

He is no Jean DeVilliers but Jean had plenty bad games where he did absolutely nothing. On attack Jacobs brings spark and consistency. Yes he definately lacks bulk and ability to smash the opposition but don't forget he never had Burger on his inside against the Lions. Hope he proves you all wrong.

Even though Jean and Francois are big losses, Kirchener was nearly everyones pick at full-back for the Lions so he should do a decent job. Worth remembereing that the return of JP should give us more on attack.

Boks by 4

By Rqd2 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Whilst i've never quite grasped why people rave about Kirchner, i hope he proves them right, and me wrong on this tour... I think a good bet for FB would be Francois Hougaard, he's an all round player, much like Pienaar and Frank Steyn, and definately one that will make an impact....

By minx - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I'd have played ruan at 15 he has been the stand in guy all season toured trained and knows it all think he should be given the oppitunity to start and I'd have Adi Jacobs over Olivier anyday of the year at least he knows how to pass.

By GRiM - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
The problem with a sharks supporter is they think that its last year and that they are still good

By riskonaught - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
True adi has not been on form this season, but olivier is an still did nothing on Friday. If only we could join the two adi's vision an oliviers stength and defence. He got the sharks 2 great tries in the pool games with well executed an thought out grubbers, can't see wynand pulling something like that. Oh please let Jean devilliers come back!!

By Jack - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Minx, did you watch the mid-week game last week?! Ruan is way too confused and out of form to even be on the bench, let alone in the starting XV. The coaching side, on National & Prov level, should really come together and finally make a decision on where he should play.

Personally, I feel he played his best rugby by far when he was playing scrumhalf. It's only after they started messing around with the kid that he totally lost the plot. I don't care what Eddie Jones said, the kid was playing good rugby & if you do want to change his position then you should make a firm decision and follow through with it, but mucking around like they've done is awful!

First 9, then 15, then 9 again, then 10, then 9 again for the sharks and then 10 again, and now everyone wants him at 15 again...you can have all the ability in the world, but if you get tossed around like that you'll end up looking mediocre, which is exactly what is happening to Pienaar. Mad

By dum_out - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Oh how King Jean and Prince Steyn will be missed!

By mikes - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
minx.. are you talking about rugby??? if you are you don't make sense.pienaar at 15, 10 ,12, 9 flank next. He has had a terrible time this year and truthfully does not belong on the bench. AD is 100% useless.

By Voorblad - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Who ever said that oliver doesnt know how to pass hasnt been watching the rugby lately, he has one of the best passes in the game.
