No surprises in Bok XV
Tuesday, November 10
The Springbok starting XV to face France in Toulouse on Friday shows four changes from the run-on XV that did duty in the Boks’ final Vodacom Tri-Nations encounter against the All Blacks in Hamilton in September.
Zane Kirchner, who made his debut in the third and final Test against the British & Irish Lions in July, returns at fullback in place of Frans Steyn, who is currently playing in France, whilst at wing, JP Pietersen, who was injured in the first away match of the Tri-Nations in Perth, returns in place of Odwa Ndungane
Centre Adi Jacobs and No. 8 Ryan Kankowski, who were on the bench in Hamilton, have been promoted to the starting line-up in the place of Jean de Villiers (overseas) and Pierre Spies (injured) respectively.
Danie Rossouw and Ruan Pienaar are only other survivors from the bench in Hamilton, with five changes being made. Lock Andries Bekker, who was also injured in the Perth Test, makes a return as does centre Wynand Olivier, who last warmed the bench for the All Black Test in Bloemfontein in July.
Adriaan Strauss, who has played five Tests to date, replaces Chiliboy Ralepelle as hooker reserve and CJ van der Linde takes the place of Jannie du Plessis as tighthead replacement. Loosehead Wian du Preez, who was called up along with Strauss and Van der Linde this week, is also amongst the reserves.
Du Preez is the only uncapped player in the 22. Van der Linde, a veteran of 56 Tests, last played for the Boks in August 2008 whilst Strauss’ last appearance was in July 2008.
“The core of the match did duty during the Tri-Nations campaign and will provide us with stability going into this tough opening Test,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.
“There are a lot of experienced players in the starting XV as well as on the bench which will be important to our continuity as well as to ensuring that we maintain our structures and play the way we want to.
“I have full confidence in the new players who will be starting on Friday, they have shown their qualities before and we have to make sure we get the best out of them. The three newcomers are all good players in their own right. CJ is very experienced whilst both Adriaan and Wian have been part of the squad previously,” De Villiers said.

3. CJ VD Linde
4. Bakkies
5. Matfield
6. Brussouw
7. Russouw
8. Schalk
9. Fourie Du preez
10. Morne
11. Habana
12. Jean De Villiers
13. J Fourie
14. JP Pietersen
15. Stephan Terblanche
16. Beast
17. Bizmark
18. Kanko
19. Bekker
20. Frans Steyn (Can play anywhere in backline)
21. Pienaar (Cover for Scrumhalf only)
22. Joe Pietersen (Can play anywhere in the backline)
Again, if there was no politics and all SA players could be used.
Who is our second best Flyhalf in the Country and who is our second best Scrumhalf.
Otherwise great team, Kirchner expected, as frans in france...maybe terblanche was a better option but thats not going to happen.
Lets hope AD gets the guthro, chilli and jannie call. to go back home.
Hes got too much talent to throw him in at this level, against the likes of France. Perhaps baby Boks first and then blood him in, what a future prospect.
Anyway that team is a dream team. We can only dream about it.
Look foward to Friday night...Viva La Bokke!

But when I see our back row, lossies wings plus morne and fourie i have great hope!
Go bokke
I rate this side and think it should do the business against the french.
Kirchner will be fine as will the most successfull rugby side in history.
Boks on top!

12 Adi Jacobs (28)
Game looser!!!! take them out and i'm 100% behind the team...
Jean De Villiers - Adi Jacobs
Pierre Spies - Ryan Kankowski
Jean Smith - Schalk Burger
That surely is a weaker Bok team!
Oliver has NEVER played well for the boks. do you remember the lions 3rd test, the 9-13 was the same (with oliver) and they didn't score a try. oliver (like ruan, i'm afraid) hasn't shown he has it in him for test level.
Adi was one of the better players last year for the boks, and back when foure was injured, few people said anything. give this new center combo a chance.
if you want to start blasting players, how about kanko? what has he ever done with the boks? he isn't any good in the norhtern winter weather.
its a not as good a 15 as in the tri nations, but under the laws regarding non-local players, its the best.
now lets get those cheetahs props in early should we struggle in the scrum...
The only guy from last weeks game who deserves a call up is Johnson, since he had a blinder, but the rest was awful! Danie Rossouw was nowhere & Johnson should've been rewarded for his fine form & included on the bench! Confused
As for Ruan Pienaar, uhm, how he's even able to make the bench is beyond me! He was terrible on the weekend and frankly played far worse than South Africa's Piñata (Earl Rose) on the day. It's shocking actually, that PDV said after the Tr-Nations that he still believes that Ruan Pienaar is better than Morne Steyn and that if he can get his kicking up to Morne's level he'll be the first choice nr 10. Firstly, Ruan will NEVER, EVER achieve that and secondly, Ruan might be all flashy on the training pitch but he hasn't delivered these Tiger Woods-ish skills on game-day & something has to be said for Morne's phenomenal B.M.T. which seems to be going unnoticed...something which any great coach will tell you is far more valuable than the odd side-step!
They should've left Ruan at 9 where he was damn good before PDV & Co tried to mold him into something different.
Criticism aside, I really hope Zane & Kankowski each have a good game and that we bang the french on home soil! I don't know about you guys, but it's been far too long since a french team has been booed by their own supporters?! Laughing
The 10 and 12 combo is a bit weak on defense, lets face it Morne is no Butch and that 110kg centre might cause a bit of problems in the midfield.
Sharks are fresh from their break, Bulls are on a high and the Cheetahs always work hard. Should be our game for the taking.
And i'm not quite sure about Jacobs but lets give him a chance peolpe.
everyon knows that wynand was the prime bok centre in this years super 14, he outclassed intl centres like barnes, nonu, smith and quade cooper!!!!
zane kichner is a great player and will be a good bok in 2-3 years, why hennie daniller wasn't chosen is beyond me!....he is a huge player who suits the bok kicking game and can clear up jacobs' missed tackles!!
With one or two exceptions-My "wish" The Lions 12 for Adi- I cannot find a better 15 right NOW but after more experience I think Peterson and Viljoen maybe good enough.
Front row is worrying, at least we have backup in CJ.
The channel 10 and 12 is worrying...but we have Schalk.
Zane Kirchner will be fine he's got habana and pietersen next to him.
I think we will be just fine.
unfortunately i think if victor was a better captain.....john smit might not even be in that 22!!!!......the oke is a legend but cj is better prop and beast is a machine!!
kirchner will be alright, though joe pietersen would have been a better choice!
Gonna be a tough 1st half I think, but once again the Boks will triumph with superior discipline and take their oppertunities when presented.
He is no Jean DeVilliers but Jean had plenty bad games where he did absolutely nothing. On attack Jacobs brings spark and consistency. Yes he definately lacks bulk and ability to smash the opposition but don't forget he never had Burger on his inside against the Lions. Hope he proves you all wrong.
Even though Jean and Francois are big losses, Kirchener was nearly everyones pick at full-back for the Lions so he should do a decent job. Worth remembereing that the return of JP should give us more on attack.
Boks by 4
Personally, I feel he played his best rugby by far when he was playing scrumhalf. It's only after they started messing around with the kid that he totally lost the plot. I don't care what Eddie Jones said, the kid was playing good rugby & if you do want to change his position then you should make a firm decision and follow through with it, but mucking around like they've done is awful!
First 9, then 15, then 9 again, then 10, then 9 again for the sharks and then 10 again, and now everyone wants him at 15 again...you can have all the ability in the world, but if you get tossed around like that you'll end up looking mediocre, which is exactly what is happening to Pienaar.
