Treu satisfied with Far East exercise

Monday, November 09 It was mission accomplished for South Africa at the Singapore Cricket Club Sevens, where the SA Vipers successfully defended their title over the weekend to clinch the international tournament for a third year in a row.

The South Africans defeated their Fijian counterparts 24-0 in the Cup Final to keep intact their impressive record of not conceding a single point throughout the two-day tournament.
Springbok Sevens coach Paul Treu declared himself satisfied with the Far East exercise, especially since his squad of twelve included five newcomers.

Neil Powell, Renfred Dazel, Ryno Benjamin, MJ Mentz and Chase Minnaar were all unavailable and Treu used the opportunity to give JW Jonker, Chris Dry, Steven Hunt, Bernado Botha and Shaun Venter their first taste of international Sevens action.

“I am pleased with the overall performance of the team. We wanted to defend our title successfully and give some new faces a taste of what it is like at this level. We managed to do that successfully and I now have a much better understanding of where we are in terms of our pre-season preparations,” said Treu.

The South Africans return home tomorrow afternoon and Treu and his management plus the regular group will go straight into training camp on Wednesday when an enlarged group of 28 players assemble in Stellenbosch for a final training stretch before competing in tournaments in Sri Lanka and Dubai.

“We are now entering the final part of our preparations before the start of the World Series next month in Dubai. The reason for the enlarged group of players is basically two-fold: we want to fine tune our training for the opening two tournaments in Dubai and George and send a competitive SA Vipers team to Sri Lanka,” explains Treu.

The Sri Lanka event takes place on 28-29 November while the IRB World Sevens Series kicks off in Dubai on 4-5 December.
