Leicester to test Boks up front
Thursday, November 05
Former Bulls and Leicester coach Heyneke Meyer has indicated that the Springboks can expect a physical battle up front when they kick-off their end-of-year tour against the English club on Friday night.
Meyer, who took over as Leicester head coach after his highly successful time as coach of the Bulls, only recently departed from the club and returned to South Africa due to personal reasons.
Meyer still thinks highly of his former club, who currently lie in fourth place in the English Premiership.
“They (Leicester) are good in the basics of the game and proud of their scrumming. They also drive well,” Meyer told
Sport24.
“It’s a very traditional club with fanatical supporters and an incredible stadium,” he said.
“The crowd is very well educated. Even when opponents kick at goal, there will be absolute silence. South Africa will be afforded that kind of respect. The fans also applaud when opponents score.”
Leicester has recently acquired the services of Wallaby winger Lote Tuqiri, but it is unlikely that the Australian speedster will make his run-on debut for the Tigers against the Boks on Friday - although he could be included on the bench.
Other internationals in the Leicester outfit include All Black Aaron Mauger, who will captain the side in Friday’s fixture, Italy prop Martin Castrogiovanni and England stars Julian White, Ben Kay, Tom Croft, Jordan Crane, Harry Ellis and Toby Flood.
Leicester are not expected to be at full-strength for the tour opener but will nevertheless provide a stern test for the so-called “dirt-trackers”, especially up front.
Some of these players might not seem to be the best in our eyes but until a team of coloured players goes out and lacks commitment and skill then I can't complain.
Everytime a team packed full of coloured players get a go they always silence the critics. I remember in 2005 when there were 8 in the team to face the wallabies and we gave them a carrot. Everyone on here wrote them off!
Leicster are a bloody good team without a few english nobodies...mauger, hamilton, castrogeovani, Kay. I still think the boks will beat them and it will be a bloody good acheivment
-Boks to win
-Earl Rose to be tackled by his own team mate or a member of the crowd and then get promoted to the 1st team.
-Chillyboy to play for 80 minutes for the 1st time of the season.
However I agree with the win for the Bokke! If we dont develope
black players how are they going to get to the point where they
can be selected on merit for the Bok team??? This is the place
to expose them to international rugby and soon they will be ready for the big time!!!!!We should also have more scouts out
looking for the Ashley Johnsons of SA rugby!!!
