Five new Boks to face Leicester
Monday, November 02
The Springbok starting XV to face Leicester in the opening tour match at Welford Road on Friday includes five uncapped players and nine players who were involved in the team’s 2009 Vodacom Tri-Nations campaign.
The team will be captained by hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle, who last captained a Springbok team against a World XV, also in Leicester, in 2006
Loose forwards Dewald Potgieter and Ashley Johnson, scrumhalf Heini Adams, centre Juan de Jongh and fullback Earl Rose will make their debuts for the Springboks whilst other newcomers to the squad – hooker Bandise Maku, lock Alistair Hargreaves, flank Davon Raubenheimer, scrumhalf Francois Hougaard and full back Riaan Viljoen are likely to earn their first caps from the bench.
The squad of 22 includes 12 players with Test experience who between them have earned 186 caps. Those who were part of the Tri-Nations squad are front-rankers Gurthro Steenkamp, captain Chiliboy Ralepelle, and Jannie du Plessis, locks Danie Rossouw and Andries Bekker, flank Heinrich Brüssow, flyhalf Ruan Pienaar, centre Wynand Olivier and wing Odwa Ndungane.
The match marks a return for wing Jongi Nokwe, who last played in the third Test against the British & Irish Lions in July, as well as for centre Meyer Bosman and prop Heinke van der Merwe, who last represented the Springboks in 2006 and 2007 respectively and have been included on the bench.
There are a total of 10 uncapped players in the match 22, six of whom have previously played for the Emerging Springboks – Potgieter, Adams, Rose, Maku and Raubenheimer, who faced the British & Irish Lions in 2009, and Johnson, at the IRB Nations Cup in 2008
Centre De Jongh has played for the Springbok Sevens team, whilst Hargreaves and Hougaard have represented South Africa at Under-19 and Under-21 levels.
“Our focus is fully on the Leicester match because it is important that we get the tour off to a good start,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.
“It is also important that we strive to give all of the newcomers game time in the opener. It is also great to have a host of players in the 22 that have played at Test level and can use their experience to assist the newcomers to settle quickly.
“Leicester will be tough opponents. They have been consistently good for the past few seasons and are one of the top club teams in the Northern Hemisphere,” de Villiers said.
Leicester Tigers are the defending Premiership champions, having beaten London Irish in the 2008/09 final in May this year. They are currently lying fourth in the 2009/10 standings after seven matches.
Friday’s match at Welford Road kicks off at 19h45 UK time (21h45 SA).
Springbok team:
1 Gurthro Steenkamp, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle (Captain), 3 Jannie du Plessis, 4 Danie Rossouw, 5 Andries Bekker, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 8 Ashley Johnson, 9 Heini Adams, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 12 Wynand Olivier, 13 Juan de Jongh, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 15 Earl Rose. Reserves: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Heinke van der Merwe, 18 Alistair Hargreaves, 19 Davon Raubenheimer, 20 Francois Hougaard, 21 Meyer Bosman, 22 Riaan Viljoen.
Decent team, except for Gurthro, Jannie and Earl.
Chili also a risk... he may get injured early on, but he is a fine player.
Starting with Burger and Kanko on the flanks and Spies on 8 or Spies on 7 and Kanko on 8
This just dont make sense. Flyhalf is not an easy position to play. Look at Francois Steyn. He a a natural 15 playing at 12 and then 10. Once he was moved back to 15 he was awesome. Anywhere else and you didnt know if he was going to win the game or lose it for you
Mr. DeVilliers what is your logic?
There I said it
Doesnt matter how good you are SIZE DOES COUNT
The front row don't look as solid. Lock combination and back three pretty pot on.
Just feel really sorry for Wynand, if you want to move Jacobs to inside, why not play him in the dirt track matches and see how he plays before taking a big risk. He is going to get run of his feet in that channel.
Not that his defence has ever been great.
Earl Rose at 15 and Pienaar at 10, does the man never learn?
The above loose trio does not convince me as Spies and Kanko are similar tyoe flanks in that they dont really do the dirty work, etc and Burger is more in teh Juan Smith type mold (it has been proven that he is not in the McCaw, Goerge Smith, Brussouw mold). That means, the trio is way too loose which really concerns me...
Any takers??
Jacobs starting at 12 is a nightmare - Kirchner, sorry buddy its too soon for you, you need a few mid week games first, and Rose, well, i can only hope you get a lucrative offer from overseas, cos P divvy is gonna have you on tour for the next 4 years and you are never gonna get a bok cap anyways......good luck
Other weaknesses are a lack of proven combinations and a very suspect back three. Nokwe and Ndungane are bad enough( with Habana and JP the first team, I would rate Lionel Mapoe,Gerhard van der Heever, Mvovo, Basson, Vulindo, Chavanga, anybody as better wingers. Joe Pietersen and francois Hougaard could also play wing and Hougaard's spot at 9 could be replaced by Pretorius or Vermaak) but don't get me started on Rose.
Here's hoping Viljoen will get the start he desereves off of the bench sooner rather than later in the game. If the forwards is where you win the game, the back three is where you can give away most points where players make mistakes. I hope PDivvy doesn't rue the fact that he underestimated Leicester to give his golden boy some game time.
Although its easy when you don't have the same pressure (from personal friends and government) to deal with.
Still think we are going to tank against france, pienaar at 12 and pieterson at 15 is still the best combination...
There is many good black players in the team who deserve to be there , please when is this going to stop!!!!!!
i don't like danie rossouw at lock; there must be better players to fill his spot. he plays of the bench for the bulls; i don't even know why he made the squad. i do, however, believe this statement will work on a few's nerves. there are many youngsters who should be in his ancient position though (he's a fossil).
even if 10 isn't pienaars position, at least PdV has been constant in the role he envisions for him.
great center pair!
odwa's too slow and earl, yes, earl.
my team would be the following (and using the squad at hand; can't do anything about that now):
1 Gurthro Steenkamp
2 Chiliboy Ralepelle (Captain)
3 Jannie du Plessis
4 Meyer Bosman (he could be a savvy line-out jumper)
5 Andries Bekker
6 Heinrich Brüssow
7 Dewald Potgieter
8 Ashley Johnson
9 Heini Adams
10 Ruan Pienaar
11 Jongi Nokwe
12 Wynand Olivier
13 Juan de Jongh
14 Francois Hougaard
15 Riaan Viljoen
it is, however, possible that WP would be able to beat this team though, but only because they've played many games together.
good luch boys!
and this will also give brussow's confidence a knock....he is streets ahead of any other flanker in the world at the moment.....can't see graham henry putting richie mcCaw in a "B" side!!!!!!
this should have been the team:
1.wp nel
2.adriaan strauss(C)
3.wicus blaauw
4.steven sykes
5.andries bekker
6.duane vermeulen
7.jean deysel
8.willem alberts
9.sarel pretorius
10.J L Potgieter
11.francois houghaard
12.wynand olivier
13.juan de jongh
14.lionel mapoe
15.hennie daniller/zane kirchner (can't really decide
from PDV's selection i presume kanko might be on the flank with schalk and jacobs at Inside centre!!!! jacobs can't tackle to save his life!!!!!......doesn't look like the best replacement for jean de villiers to me!!!
Lets hope that Chilli proves everybody wrong and as captain his game will improve as well!!
15 Earl "the Pearl" Rose 14 .Odwa " speedy" Ndungane 11.Jongi" tackles "Nokwe
on to serios business ,it looks like pdv is going to play schalla and brussows as flanks and with the spies injured jean deysel has already been called up
possible test team
1.beast
2.bismarck
3.smit
4.bakkies
5.matfield
6.brussows
7.schalla
8.kanko/deysel
9.fdp
10.morne
11.habana.
12.adi
13.fourie
14.jpp
15.kirchner
Personally I would like to see De Jongh make an impression and maybe sneek into the test side (if only on the bench) but that is possibly wishfull thinking. The kid is still a youngster. Sometimes a youngster that steps into a side with this much experience finds it easy to perform at his best (or even above).
