"Fats" returns for Tsunami clash

Friday, October 16 Samoan and Auckland legend Peter Fatialofa has come out of retirement for a Tsunami appeal match between an American Samoa XV and a Samoan selection at Eden Park on Sunday.

A 120kg scrummaging powerhouse in his heyday, “Fats” captained Western Samoa in the 1991 World Cup, where he led his team to the quarterfinals with wins over Wales and Argentina.

Following his playing career, he went into coaching and was among other things the forwards coach of the Pacific Islanders.

He has agreed to double as player coach of the American Samoa XV for this special fixture, which is sure to be a running rugby spectacle.

Fatialofa’s team include legendary All Black and Samoan figures such as prop Craig Dowd, flank Josh Kronfeld, captain and No 8 Pat Lam, centre Frank Bunce, wing Jeff Wilson and replacements Glenn Osborne and Shane Howarth.

The Samoa selection, in turn, boasts stars such as prop Olo Brown, captain and centre Martin Stanley, fullback Christian Cullen and replacements Alama Ieremia and Adrian Cashmore.
