Ireland pick Boks for inaugural Test

Thursday, October 08 The Springboks will play the opening match at the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin – on the site of the old Lansdowne Road – when the 50 000 capacity stadium hosts its first rugby International on 6 November next year (2010).

SA Rugby announced on Thursday that it had accepted an invitation from the Irish Rugby Football Union to be the first international opposition to play Ireland in the new Stadium. The Aviva Stadium is due to be handed over to the Irish Rugby Football Union and Football Association of Ireland upon completion in April next year.

Ireland are already scheduled to play Samoa, New Zealand and Argentina during November in 2010 as part of the international calendar. The Springbok fixture has been added to that schedule to open the international season.

The historical significance of the game will also see a reversal of the age-old international rugby tradition of the home team changing its jersey in the event of a colour clash. To mark the special occasion SA Rugby has agreed to wear an alternative strip to allow the Ireland team to wear their traditional green jersey.

“We’re delighted to have been invited to help Ireland mark this historic occasion,” said Andy Marinos, acting managing director of SA Rugby. “It is an honour to have been asked and is the second time that the privilege has gone to the World Champion Springboks. In 1999 we were the opposition when the Welsh Rugby Union opened the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.”

IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne said, “The Aviva stadium promises to become an iconic landmark for Irish sport and we are delighted that World Champions South Africa have agreed to be the opposition for the game.”

And what better way to welcome them to their new stadium than by thumping them in their own back yard?!

Not a chance StOOrt, the only member of this bok team that beat us in dublin is John Smit and that was 9 years ago. The current Bok team have yet to beat us on Irish soil. Good luck though and I mean that very sincerly!!

krustykum, we won the last world cup, or did you forget?

And the Trinations!

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! Ireland beat the Boks?! Have you gone totally mad krustybrown OR have you been in a prolonged coma for the past year?

We're World Champions, We beat the Lions (which included the bumbling Irish), and We just won the Tri-Nations by beating the All Blacks three times in a row & the Wallabies twice.

If I were to venture a guess, the Irish haven't done anything close to that, EVER! Laughing

Way to show off your selective memory krustyclown!
Your "argument" of SA last winning in 2000 is of less relevance to than game than SA being World Champions or ranked #1 in the World!
You choose to forget the fact that SA hold an overall record of 14 wins to 3 over Ireland! Oh, and why didn't you mention that SA beat Ireland 7 times before in your precious Dublin (to Irelands 3). And did your selective memory not allow you to recall that Ireland have NEVER won in SA!? And I'm not talking about when you have to get the help of 3 of your neighbours to gang up on one Nation... Which SA won (the Series at least) too!

BTW, I'm not saying Ireland don't stand a chance... just that your argument of "this current Bok team" is ignorant and irrelevant! They last played Ireland in 2006... Rather look at what "this current Bok team" has done since then! Wink

Oh, and one of those 3 wins as pointed out by Stormer14 was courtesy of Paul Honiss and his famous "talk to your players" statement towards Smit while he allowed O'Gara to steal a try! Confused

Me thinks John will be out to avenge that loss along with that terrible performance when they celebrated the Boks 100th year of existence.

The other 2 wins being 17 - 12 back in 2004 (ok, a win is a win) and 15 - 12... in 1906... SA vs Great Britain in Dublin!! Why that's seen as a win to Ireland I don't know!

By Stormer14 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
My bad... the 17 - 12 win was the "Paul Honiss" match and the other win was 9 - 6 back in 1965.

Anyways, doesn't make Irelands history vs the Boks suck any less and surely isn't relevant to the match.

I love making the South africans irrate!! world champions, trinations champions, congratulations well done! This year and on current form, the boks got hammered in the 3rd teast by the lions and again in Oz. We havent lost a match this year. Rugby is your national sport so its obvious that your good at it, rugby is only 4th in the pecking order of sports in Ireland. Theres always a chance that you'll beat us but on current form, I kinda doubt it. Just ask Jean de Villers.

Uhmm, the only reason we lost to the Lions in the final test was because it was a "dead-rubber" test & we rotated almost all the players in our squad, off course we were going to lose. As for the loss against Australia, well it was always on the cards since they got thrashed by us the week before and Deans along with his entire squad was under a huge amount of pressure, so they were bound to hit back.

I don't care if Ireland hasn't lost all year, who is it that they've played against? Have they beaten the AB's, Australia, and most importantly SA?! The answer is a resounding NO! The fact is that the Northern Hemisphere isn't close to the Southern Hemisphere, and you can deny that all you want, but it won't make it any less true.

If a combination of FOUR Nations couldn't beat the Boks, I seriously doubt that the good old Irish on their own is going to manage it.

You crack me up man, keep these jokes of yours coming! Laughing

@krustybrown,what sports do you have thats more popular than rugby?I suppose chess could be one of them, that would explain the state of your rugby,if its soccer its even worse and saying you haven't lost a game this year against teams like italy and england is nothing to write home about and it does not count because your season is at the end and beginning of a year and when you loose against the Boks you will most likely say we lost be we put up a good fight, thats the difference between us and the guys in the north, you have a culture of "We almost beat the Boks so thats good enough for us" whereas We have a culture of "LOOSING IS NOT AN OPTION!!!!!!"and that is why, even though the Lions got THUMPED,they got greeted as hero's because second best is good enough for you and that is what you will always be,Second Best! Wink

Sports that Ireland have that are more popular than Rugby.

Gaelic football (Kinda like Aussie rules but more violent)
Hurling (Like hockey for mental patients and psychopaths)
Soccer (Played by girls mostly)
then and only then.....
Rugby (Played by a select few, automatic place in heaven despite being Catholic)

You with the rediciously long name, yeah YOU...you're either blind OR just plain stupid, but there's nobody better than Spies, Brussouw (I don't know if you were just joking or being serious), Habana, or Juan Smith in the Irish squad! Shocked

You should change your name to "I_wish_I_was_a_smart_rugby_supporter", hit the yellow brick road & go find yourself a brain mate!

Cool I’m famous!! I'll be seeing y'all in the Hogan Stand Nov 28th and in the Foggy Dew for a few Jars after the match. I'll be the one gut-laughing at anything in a green and gold jersey. Save your pathetic stereotype insults for then. Leprechauns drinking stout and the like. Is that the limit of your intelligence?

All I’m doing is disagreeing with a few opinions on this site and am being blasted for it!! Some things never change in the Republic.

Its kinda getting to be a common act, beating the boks in Dublin over the last few years. Try not to make it too easy for us next month lads! And if by some cruel twist of fate we do lose, I’ll be the first to congratulate the Boks unlike some of the sore one sided immature cretins featured above and probably below in the next few hours!!

By BullsRob - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Nov 28 I'll be in Marsailles, France watching a decent game with some Kiwi mates cause I don't think the Spud suckers can front up.... Boks will walk it!!

soundly-wait and see!!

krustybrown, seems you have stirred up a hornet's net here with all these precious, fragile Safers egos!

I will tell you why they are so sensitive to any criticism

First - if the Boks lose to the Irish or the French, that will make their team appear not so invincible and that will crush them forever, their manhood will suffer a massive blow

Second - they fear that since their game pattern closely rememble your Northern Hemisphere Teams, with drop goals mentality galore, they might not do so well

so take heart krustybrown, and imagine that sinking feeling they will feel when it is only 30seconds to go, and the Irish are ahead by 8points Wink

Last World Cup Ireland were very nearly taken to the cleaners by a stalwart Georgia. I watched the game, it was nearly the biggest upset of the century. Does any body remember Hugo Porto's side (Argentina) played 2 tests in SA, the first test the Boks whipped them 52-nil, but the next test they beat us.
Arrogance and overconfidence is a big enemy to a rugby side and many great NZ side has been whipped by a side like France (twice in WC series) etc etc, SA has fallen to it on several occasions. Ireland could well teach us a lesson of humility and respect.

Hey guys - don't talk "too big" yet - we don't know what sort of team we will have on tour.
I think PdV is going to pick a lot of emerging players and rest some "oldies".
