All Blacks blitz Wallabies
Saturday, September 19
New Zealand avoided its worst-ever home season by beating Australia 33-6 on Saturday, with flyhalf Daniel Carter scoring 18 points and having a hand in three tries.
Winger Cory Jane scored a first half try off a high kick from Carter and Ma'a Nonu touched down in the second half try from a Carter in-pass.
Winger Joe Rokocoko added his 45th test try on the full time whistle, from an initial cut-out pass from Carter, to seal New Zealand's third-straight win over Australia this year.
Carter missed his first shot at goal, then landed three conversions and four penalties to finish with seven goals from eight attempts, passing 100 points in tests at Wellington.
Australia's only points came from a penalty to Matt Giteau and drop goal to Berrick Barnes.
South Africa had previously clinched the 2009 Tri-Nations title with five wins from six matches. New Zealand finished second with three wins from six games, all at Australia's expense, while Australia had only one win in six matches.
New Zealand entered the match under intense pressure after a series of poor performances this season, notably last week's 32-29 loss to South Africa which surrendered the Tri-Nations title it had held for the past two years.
A loss on Saturday would have been New Zealand's third at home this year - the worst record in its history - but it shrugged off that prospect and a tide of public criticism with an emphatic performance.
The All Blacks dominated set pieces, repairing a lineout which was dysfunctional last weekend, and overwhelmed Australia at the breakdown, attacking that area with greater numbers and urgency than the Wallabies.
Jane, who won a starting place in the absence of the injured Sitiveni Sivivatu, helped ignite the New Zealand backline with a series of deft touches and strong runs.
"It was another torrid test match. They don't get any easier," New Zealand captain Richie McCaw said.
"We were under pressure but there was a belief right across the squad, among the coaches, managers and players that what we had was going to be enough.
"To come off last week and produce a performance like that, we can be very proud."
The All Blacks' win was their sixth in seven matches against Australia since New Zealander Robbie Deans became coach of the Wallabies last year.
Australia took an early lead with a seventh-minute penalty to Matt Giteau but Carter put New Zealand ahead 9-3 with goals in the 13th, 16th and 21st minutes.
Berrick Barnes cut the lead to 9-6 with a drop goal from a penalty advantage in the 28th minute, after a high tackle for which All Blacks center Isaia Toeava was sin-binned.
Jane's try came while the All Blacks were reduced to 14 men.
Carter kicked high towards the Wallabies' left flank and Jane won the ball in the air, then stepped through the last of Australia's defense.
Carter's conversion gave the All Blacks a 16-6 halftime lead and he put them ahead 19-6 with a penalty five minutes into the second half.
That scoreline remained until the 75th minute when Nonu scored off a deft inside flick from Carter. Rokocoko, who had previously been struggling for form, lifted some personal pressure with his try on full time.
"We prepared well for the game and the boys were determined to play well but there were a couple of areas in which we were lacking tonight," Australia captain George Smith said.
Scorers:
New Zealand - Tries: Ma`a Nonu, Joe Rocokoco, Cory jane. Conversions: Daniel Carter (3). Penalties: Carter (4).
Australia - Penalties: Matt Giteau. Drop Goal: Berrick Barnes.
Toeava looks like he might fially be getting over his problems in a black jersey, although what can you take out of that game even as an NZer...Oz was freakin horrible
Clinical and assertive. AB's are getting back to their best!
At least it gives Henry and the AB's a fake sense of selfbelieve in their competitiveness.
This was the year of the Boks, that is all that matters.
You would think that the Wobblies would take this one after having a week of, but looks like the AB's are finding their rythm and would be a hard team to beat next year.
Especially with some our top players leaving to play in Europe.
I guess this type of thing go's around now a days.
Wow, were the Wallabies crushed! Completely non-existent in the set-pieces. They didn't even appear to want to be there at all.
There went my prediction that I thought they (Wallabies) would win at Wellington.
I must say though...happily proven wrong.
All Blacks coach Graham Henry praised his side's performance but said they would also need to learn lessons from the Tri-Nations, particularly about how to counteract South Africa's pressure-based style of play.
South Africa won the title last week with a 32-29 victory over New Zealand, courtesy of a game plan that turns the opposition around with a pinpoint kicking game and ac(edited)ulates points by applying pressure inside their attacking half.
"The South Africans are a good side. They don't play a lot of rugby and they put pressure on you," Henry said. "No disrespect to the South Africans, they are the best in the world. But when two sides are trying to play rugby it is a much better spectacle," he added of Saturday's match when both sides were willing to use the ball in hand more.
"We weren't under the same sort of pressures (in Wellington) ... it's a different game and different opposition and at the moment we are struggling to handle that South African pressure."
was that (edited)ing goat watching the same game?
We better watch this NZ team next year! Well done ABs!!!
ABs were awesome at the breakdown, piling in numbers with good effect and turning over wannabee ball. There was no northern hemisphere ref to assist the wobblies at the breakdown, and so George Smith and co could not get away with the usual offside and hands in ruck cheating tactics that he has so mastered over the years.
Rat Giteau was nowhere to be found and James o Connor is way over-rated as being 'talented'. O Connor lost the game for the wobblies, with his arrogance and inexperience. After the Brisbane debacle, they had him on the rugby club, and the tool said he was inteested to see how the Boks would respond to the loss. Well, I am now interested to see how Dingo responds responds to keeping him at fullback.
At the end of the day, the ABs have shut the big-mouth wobblies up and exposed them for the fakes that they really are. Good on you ABs.
.
We certainly play more rugby than what was on display yesterday. Our rolling mauls actually go places. Our box kicks and up and unders are pinpoint, they don't go 20 meters too far. Jungle rugby... that's what the Wallabies and All Blacks are playing... they still think the ELVs are around.
Palu needs to start at 8 and move George back to 7. Our scrum was not strong at all. Hats off to the All Blacks they played well and it appears Carter is hiting his old form.
Robbie Deans has been bulllet proof in the media over here. A few poor replacements or lack there of and selections may have changed that.
James O'connor- how long have a been saying how overrated this kid is, he has done absolutely nothing at international level or at super14 level to deserve the wraps he gets in australia. I feel like ive been away for 3years and missed something, this kid belongs in school. he is a nobody he single handedly lost the game for australia.
Robbie deans - Such a well respected coach is making a mess of his new job, Any one could see the shocker oconner was having from early in the 1st half yet he refused to sub him. he could of moved mitchell to fullback. It became clear that the all blacks targeted him and caught him out of position numerous times
The rest of the team - Lathargic, awful performance really made the all blacks look better than they are. but i surpose they never really had any go forward ball as the allblacks pinned them in there own half by catching o conner out. I thought this team was destined for big things and predicted them to be in the 2011 world cup final but at the rate they are going they wont be close. if the world cup was next week the springboks would win it with their eyes closed with the way these other monkeys are playing.
Thybulle- you are dead right junglerugby is all they are playing
as for graham henry what an idiot he has no idea, has no grip on his team. Cant handle the fact that running rugby which is all his team can do plays into the hands of the springboks, and why is that??? because the springboks are better rugby players 3/3
Love it when the Aussies get the wooden spoon, bringsw a big grin to my face and a warm feeling inside!
WELL DONE BOKKE, COME ON SHARKIES!! Go you good things!
up for ages but Henry really gets his fingers up your dates
so well done to him and hope he gets his fist up all yours next
year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boks are the best for 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Henry best at stirring you guys/gals 2009!!!!!!!!!!
Is there something sinister going on at NZRU, or are they afraid of Henry?..baffling.
