Super 14 draft draw announced

Tuesday, October 07 The Sharks and the Bulls are set for an re-enactment of their epic Super 14 final last year when the 2009 series kicks off in February next year.

In the proposed draft fixtures circulated to the franchises the two sides will meet in Durban on February 6 in the first round of the competition which will most probably see play-offs between the top six sides and not the top four as has been the case until now.

The Cheetahs and the Stormers will be involved in another derby in the first round and the Lions will be at home against the Waratahs.

The Cheetahs are the first South African side to play overseas in 2009's Super 14. They meet the Force on February 20 - the first of five matches on the road with the Reds, Hurricanes, Blues and the Highlanders to follow over the next four weekends.

They are followed by the Sharks who meet the Chiefs in Hamilton on February 27. They have another three matches in the Antipodes over the following three weekends.

The Bulls have five games overseas, the first on March 20 against the Hurricanes in Wellington followed by the Highlanders, Crusaders, Waratahs and Brumbies.

This time it is the Stormers that get the shortened of the stick. They play Crusaders in New Zealand before returning to Australia for matches against the Waratahs and Brumbies before another trans-Tasman trip to play the Hurricanes and Highlanders in New Zealand.

The Lions' overseas matches are against the Chiefs, Blues, Reds and Force on four consecutive weekends starting on April 4.

As it now stands most matches on the draft fixture list are scheduled for Friday, but this is bound to be reviewed and revised when the Sanzar committee meets in Sydney on October 15 to discuss the competition.

Other issues that will be on the table will include the set of ELVs to be used with South Africa strongly favouring the international ELVs in order to be prepared for the British and Irish Lions tour just after the Super 14.

The Waratahs are also upset that, due to the intricacies involved in fitting in the extended competition before the Lions tour, they will have to make two trips to South Africa - a first for any side from Australia or New Zealand since the inception of the competition in 1996.

The new proposed play-off structure, with the fourth to sixth teams on the log playing to determine which two will go in to the semi-finals against the top two log finishers, will also be discussed and refined.

The Stormers don't have a bad draw at all - opportunity to get some early points at home, then they host the Chiefs and the Force at home toward the end when the pressure is on.

The six team playoff will almost certainly work in their favour too.

Not bad draw at all for Stormers!
Good be a good year!

By thabiso - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Atleast now the Stormers will have a chance to make it to the playoffs.

By Controversial1 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Surely it must be top eight playoff?? How would top six work? Can't be knock out then??

By Blokkies - Castle Braai recommendations: 1
They're killing me. How the hell am I supposed to watch rugby if it's played on a bloody Friday??? Evil or Very Mad

By forgottenplayer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
The only good thin about friday is that we can follow the games in the Liveticker and consequently pimp the allday at work. But still does not make sense.

And the playoffs will be like that:
a)3rd vs 6th
b)4th vs 5th

semis:
winner a vs 1st
winner b vs 2nd

Mmm a interesting draw that. Our away leg overseas is gonna be a tough one. Crusaders, 'Tahs, Brumbies and Hurricanes. Thats gonna be a tough ask to walk away with points after those games. But our hme games we must def push for a full tally of points. Reds,Lions,Chiefs and Force should be relatively easy with the only hard games been Sharks and Chiefs. And the Cheetahs and Bulls away from hme should make for a very interesting Super 14 next year, especially if they are going to have a top 6 play-off!!!

Friday! What genius came up with the idea of Friday rugby? Can anyone come up with a sensible reason why Friday!

By rugbyman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
they have always had games on fridays. at least in new zealand they have

By Sarge - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Well Schizo, u can always go for an extended Client Pub Lunch on Friday!!!

I'm so glad all the games are on a Friday, because nobody in South Africa works on Fridays. We all just sit around in pubs eating biltong and drinking with our friends, and now their will conveniently be rugby on for us to watch. What the hell are these punks thinking? The South African audience is going to be 10% of what it normally is for the whole Super 14. WE WORK ON FRIDAY'S!!! What now, we get to watch the 7 o'clock in the evening game? That's one game a weekend for the average South African.

Stupid!

good draw for sharks!!

By Boytjie - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
This play-off thing seems a bit dodgy....won't affect the Sharks I suppose cause they're gonna finish top of the log anyway!

I agree with you all about the Friday thing, it is just silly, we wont get to see the S14, we'll just hear about it on the radio the next morning. Not cool, not cool at all.

Go the chiefs

By RagingBull - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
this is (edited)in bull(edited)...friday's??? Need i remind mnr. Hoskins that SA has the biggest TV viewers in the Southern - Hem. Why would they air most of the games when the biggest population of viewers cant watch the games?

Plus, top six play-off? Please, that makes as much sence as the Tri-Nations home and away set up!

Ah friday games!....at least moving to Australia was good for something.

By Schizo - Castle Braai recommendations: 1
ok so no one has a good reason why it should be Fridays only. proves my point. rugby bosses have gone mad! mad i tell you. mad like a dog in the midday sun (that's from to kill a mockingbird - some useless info for you to digest).

sure one or two friday games are cool by the pool. but all games on a friday? oh well. guess i'll have to watch my grass grow on a saturday instead. and by grass i mean grass not mary jane/dagga/pot : ) although... if i had a crop of it i could now smoke it on a saturday cos i wouldn't have anything important to watch.

I hope these Friday games is a joke!

By SpringbokSarah - Castle Braai recommendations: 1

By Slatsky - Castle Braai recommendations: 0

By slapper - Castle Braai recommendations: 0

THIS FRIDAY (edited) BLOWS DONKEY BALLS!!! LIVIN IN LONDON MEANS IM GONNA HAVE TO TAPE EVERY GAME!!!! (edited)IN (edited) (edited) (edited) !

By Luway - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Guys, the whole Friday thing is an error... for example, round14 has 4 SA teams playing on the same say... when would the first game be? At 9 in the morning... ridiculous...

By Moses - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Oh poor Stormers, what a very short stick. My God, you actually have to travel to New Zealand twice from Eastern Australia, that's like 3 hours in a plane and then you'd have to get your passport out! Perhaps you can take some comfort from the Tahs who also get two of these horrorific trans-tasman trips.

What about STADIUM ATTENDANCE !!! Our teams will lose big time if all matches are played on Friday. Doesn't make sense !!!

By KiwiJoe - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
No! although there will be one Friday game every round here they will have to revert back to stacking Saturdays up from "dawn to dark" as stadium attendance will be nil here anyway.

My Canes should feature come the business end and I am liking the "Cape All Blacks" prospects too.
