Chiefs full-back Mils Muliaina is in a race to be fit for his side's match with the Highlanders in Hamilton on Saturday.

Muliaina left the field with an injured elbow during the first half of the Chiefs' victory over the Crusaders in Christchurch last weekend.

Initiallly it was feared that he tore the tendon from the bone and would need surgery, but the former All Black has been cleared to return to training, which will boost the Chiefs' odds with bookmakers like Paddy Power.

He's optimistic of playing against the Highlanders, despite the recurrence of the injury which he first sustained while playing in Japan.

"I'm feeling pretty good and hopefully I'll be back playing this weekend," Muliaina told TVNZ.

"There was a lot of swelling from the weekend, but its gone down and we'll see how I go at training."

Although he left the field due to injury against the Crusaders, Muliaina enjoyed his brief return to Super Rugby as he looks to help the Chiefs win a third straight title.

"It was nice to be back playing some intense rugby," he said.

"To play the way we did and come away with the four points is very pleasing."
