Western Province president Thelo Wakefield has suspended negotiations with the City of Cape Town over a possible move to Cape Town Stadium.

Wakefield has also suspended a planned three-day workshop with the City. This after Mayoral Committee member Grant Pascoe said talks 'were taking place behind closed doors' to secure WP as the anchor tenant for the stadium.

"I have always said that if we move to Cape Town Stadium, then all the details will be made public and the process must be fair, open and transparent," Wakefield told the Cape Times.

"I communicate with all 91 clubs regularly and if I lie they will never believe me again.

"I suspended talks because my credibility is at stake, and that of our consultant and the executive committee, because we are accountable to all the clubs. The clubs are the owners of Newlands and the ultimate decision to possibly relocate to Cape Town Stadium is their decision.

"To ensure that WP rugby has financial stability for the next 50 years, we have to remain sure that we can remain financially stable, as we have been at Newlands."

Pascoe responded by saying it was no secret that technical teams from the city and the rugby union were in talks.
