Lions waiting on injuries
Lions head coach Johan Ackermann is content with the depth to his squad ahead of their return to Super Rugby this season.
After missing out in 2013 with the Kings taking their spot in the competition, the Lions won the promotion/relegation playoff at the end of last season to reclaim their place.
Willie Wepener, Franco van der Merwe, Derick Minnie, Elton Jantjies and Lionel Mapoe have all returned from their loan spells to other South African teams in last year's competition.
There is concern though over a number of injuries to players including Jantjies, Anthony Volmink, Ruan Dreyer, Ruan Combrinck, Deon Van Rensburg and Mapoe before the start of the season.
Ackermann stated that he expected the majority of those on the injury list to be available for the opening round.
"It looks like most of the players came back in good nick after the break. It's now up to us to see who the best 35 players are," Ackermann told Eyewitness News.
"We've still got four or five Pumas players and two Leopards players with us, and hopefully we'll get some of our injured players back before the first game.
"Elton Jantjies and Anthony Volmink are two of our main players. By the second or third round I think all of our players will be fully fit and available for selection.
"Ruan Combrinck, Lionel Mapoe, Deon van Rensburg and Dylan Des Fountain will all probably be fit in the next three to four weeks."
