New Zealand lock Brodie Retallick expects another gruelling encounter against South Africa in Johannesburg on October 5.

Retallick revealed that the All Blacks' 29-15 win over South Africa in Auckland was among the most physical matches he's played, and he he's expecting an increased level of intensity when they face their arch-rivals in what could be The Rugby Championship title decider at Ellis Park in three weeks time.

"It's awesome to play in a stadium in New Zealand that's full of black, but it's the complete opposite over there and it's a hostile atmosphere," Retallick said.

"We're expecting to face what they brought here and maybe another step up."

Retallick, who scored his  first Test try in the weekend's clash, was one of the best players in action at Eden Park and All Blacks coach Steve Hansen hailed the 22-year-old's performance after the match.

"We talked during the week that we needed to set the tone and not take a backward step," Retallick added.

"If they got the upper hand, then the momentum might have been the other way, so we really put a big emphasis to stop it and kill it as best we could."
