Former Springbok flanker Juan Smith has joined Top 14 outfit Toulon on a one-year deal, club president Mourad Boudjellal has confirmed.

The 32-year-old retired earlier in the year after being sidelined for 18 months due to an Achilles tendon injury. However, he will now attempt a return to the playing field with the European champions, who you can back for success again this season by checking out the latest odds online here with Betfair.

Smith was first linked with Toulon last month and underwent a barrage of tests in order to prove his fitness. The South African later revealed that he had been cleared to play, but was still negotiating a contract, a matter which appears to have now been resolved.

"The defeat by Grenoble (28-26 on Saturday) expedited our decision," Boudjellal is quoted as telling the Nice-Matin newspaper of the decision to sign Smith.

Capped 69 times by the Springboks, Smith will join fellow South Africans Bakkies Botha, Bryan Habana, Joe van Niekerk, Danie Rossouw and Michael Claassens at Toulon.
