South African prop Schalk Ferreira has signed for French giants Toulouse as a replacement for the injured Georgian Vasil Kakovin.

29-year-old Ferreira, presently with the Eastern Province Kings, can also play hooker and would help fill a place in the front row which has been decimated by injuries.

Kakovin ruptured the cruciate ligaments in his right knee, fellow prop Antoine Guillamon fractured a bone in his right hand and Kakovin's compatriot hooker Jaba Bregvadze is also out for a long time with a triple fracture of the mastoid, all of them suffering the injuries in the 40-3 thrashing of Bayonne last weekend.

"They will be arriving on Monday," Toulouse's head of recruitment Jean-Michel Rancoule told AFP, referring also to South African youngster Martens van den Heever, who will join the youth academy.

Ferreira came through the youth system with Western Province but had to at one point halt his career because of a neck injury before returning in 2012.
