Blue Bulls hooker Willie Wepener has been released from his contract with the union and will be joining the Lions.

Wepener's decision comes after the Lions allowed Callie Visagie to remain with the Bulls after he had spent the Super Rugby season on loan with the Pretoria outfit.

With Kings hooker Bandise Maku also on his way to the Bulls, Wepener - who was a strong performer in his side's draw with Western Province on Saturday - has decided it is in his best interests to move across the Jukskei River to the Lions.

"We are very sad about losing Willie, but has decided not to stand in his way," Pienaar told the Bulls' official website.

"There is a longer term option for him [Wepener] available at the Golden Lions and it will be wrong of us to deny him that.

"He has been a real warrior for us, so we want to wish him well in this move and thank him for his services to us."

It will be Wepener's third stint with the Lions, having previously turned out for the Johannesburg-based outfit between 2002 and 2004 and then again from 2006 to 2009.
