RWC Sevens: Day One

There were no early shocks as the 2013 Sevens World Cup began in Moscow on Friday, with a win for World Series champions New Zealand.

Gordon Tietjiens' side ran out 31-12 winners over Canada with Sherwin Stowers bagging two scores.

2009 winners Wales began the defence of their title with a 33-5 victory over Uruguay, with Chris Knight scoring two tries.

England were level with Portugal at 7-7 by half-time, but broke away in the second-half thanks to tries from Tom Mitchell and a second for John Brake.

Seabelo Senatla continued his good form shown in the Junior World Championship by scoring two tries in South Africa's comfortable 24-0 victory over the hosts Russia in Pool B.

The other winners included Australia, France, Kenya, Samoa, USA, Fiji and Argentina, with Scotland pipping to Japan to a 19-17 win in the last match of the day at the Luzhniki Stadium.
