'Stormers not for Jantjies'
Former All Black playmaker Carlos Spencer believes that Elton Jantjies' poor showing in this year's Super Rugby season is the result of the Stormers' conservative approach.
Jantjies has endured a rough season after securing a highly-anticipated loan move from the Lions. The Stormers have struggled as a team too, with the Cape outfit 11th on the overall table.
While Jantjies has come in for heavy criticism, Spencer feels that it's the team tactics that are to blame for the number ten's failures.
"Elton is a flair-player who plays with confidence. He's an exciting young player, but the Stormers' game-plan doesn't suit him," Spencer told Die Burger.
"The Stormers focus on defence and not attack. Elton wants to express himself and you have to give someone like that freedom to take charge.
"I would definitely say the Stormers aren't the right team for him."
Spencer, who coached Jantjies while working with John Mitchell at the Lions, feels that the Stormers could make better use of both the fly-half and the rest of their back division.
"Elton likes to attack the gain line and if he's not allowed to do that, and doesn't get players that run into space next to him, then he'll struggle," he added.
"The Stormers do have quality outside backs, but don't know how to use them."
