Bulls flanker Jacques Potgieter is set to leave the Pretoria-based franchise for good after requesting a release from his contract.

According to the Beeld website, Potgieter is set to sign a deal with a big club in Great Britain.

The 27-year-old's contract at the Bulls was recently extended to 2015, but with an exemption to play six months in Japan after the Super Rugby competition.

He is still heading there where he will play for the Fukuoka Sanix Blues, but won't return to the Bulls afterwards. Potgieter represented South Africa in three Tests in 2012 but hasn't been in action on the international stage since the Springboks' disappointing 16-all draw against Argentina in Mendoza last August.

He has also been out of favour at the Bulls this season with Dewald Potgieter and Arno Botha ahead of him in the pecking order.

"I'm extremely excited for what lies ahead," Potgieter said.

"My time at the Bulls was unbelievable and I'm thankful for every coach and team-mate that was part of my life.

"However, I want to get more game time and understand completely that the current crop of loose forwards in the structures work well for the team."

Potgieter apparently received several offers overseas, but decided on a club with a "similar culture to the Bulls".

He will leave in two weeks' time to complete the process.
