Melbourne Rebels back Richard Kingi has been ruled out for up to eight weeks with a knee injury and will require surgery.

Kingi's injury came in the agonising 27-30 defeat to the Southern Kings on Saturday in Melbourne, compounding the home side's woes.

The loss leaves the Rebels bottom of the Australian Conference behind the Force on points difference and second bottom of the Super Rugby table.

In a statement, Rebels head coach Damien Hill confirmed Kingi's injury and his belief that the back's resilience will see him back on the pitch as soon as possible.

"One of Richard's greatest strengths is his resilience. He has shown this in the way he has worked his way back to form after the past month," said Hill.

"We are all disappointed for him. At this stage we are unsure on his return, but knowing Richard he will do everything he can to put himself in the best position to return this Super Rugby season."
