Baby Boks lock Paul Willemse has left for Brisbane to join the Bulls as cover for Flip van der Merwe who is in doubt for the Saturday's clash with the Reds.

There is still some hope that Van der Merwe may recover in time to face the Reds after he took a knock to the chest in last weekend's 41-19 defeat to the Crusaders in Christchurch.

The initial diagnosis was five to 10 days out, but the Bulls are hoping for a quick recovery for the 27-year-old Springbok.

According to Bulls coach Frans Ludeke the decision to fly Willemse out is a precaution, as a final call on Van der Merwe will only be made on Wednesday.

Grant Hattingh, one of the other locks on tour, is also doubtful with concussion and although Jacques Potgieter can fill in in the second row, if necessary, Willemse can easily see action in Brisbane.
