Western Province and Stormers flanker Siya Kolisi's stellar season has been rewarded with the Newcomer of the Year Award at the SA Sports Awards.

The 21-year-old walked off with the gong in Sandton on Sunday evening in regonition of his fantastic year which saw him make his Stormers debut, playing in 16 of his team's 17 matches.

Kolisi was called up to the Springbok training squad in June but did not feature in any matches. Many felt he was on the brink of breaking into the national side only to suffer a season-ending thumb injury in the Currie Cup.

In the Coach of the Year category, Banyana Banyana's Joseph Mkhonza walked away with the spoils, edging out Stormers and WP boss Allister Coetzee who guided his teams to the SA Conference title (Super Rugby) and the Currie Cup title.
