Catrakilis sticks with Kings
Oct 31,2012
Despite talk of him doing a U-turn on his move, Currie Cup hero Demetri Catrakilis has said he will be playing Super Rugby for the Southern Kings.
The Western Province playmaker, who kicked two drop-goals in last week's final in Durban, is to join up with fellow newcomer, hooker Bandise Maku.
"I'm excited, I made the decision I wanted to go to the Kings a while ago and I've now stuck to it. It's a new challenge and I'm excited to prove myself in Super Rugby," he told EWNSport on Wednesday.

He should be very well versed in kicking from the dead ball line under pressure by the end of the season

The only time he is going to kick at the sticks is in practice.

Honouring a committment, fair enough but I can't see how this will be good for him moving forward. If he wanted to throw his name in the mix along with Morne Steyn, Lambie, Goosen and Jantjies for higher honours, the Kings wont be the place to do it.
I am actually hoping the Kings get dicked every game purely because I dont agree with the way they promoted themselves into the best competition in the world (in terms of rugby) when they didnt come close to qualifying for the Currie Cup legitimately. They should have had a relegation/promotion play off with the Lions! They have torn that union apart after they were slowly rebuilding so what we have now is 2 poor unions instead of just the Kings!

As previously mentioned logic man, the inclusion of the Kings has got to be a good move for rugby in SA. It has the potential to expose a whole new population base to the higher level of international game. It is incumbant on SA Rugby to make sure that enough good players represent the team to make it competitive so that the future in the E.Cape can endure, and then once again we can see players like Garth Wright and Danie Gerber emerge again!
I do concede that the process could have been better managed!

A new team is always good, but not at the expense of another, and certainly not the way it was done. The isue now is that the Lions, once the mighty Transvaal, face a very uphill if not impossible task of getting back to S15. Any player in the (old) team worth his salt will look to pick up a contract elsewhere, it has already started with Jantjes, Taute.
So even if there was a relegation play-off at the end of the 2013 season (is that the plan?), the Lions will have to try their best with what's left of their Currie Cup side. Unless the brains at SARU come up with another clever idea

The queens are a disaster and a fraud. Away with the queens and back with the Lions. I have absolutley no time for the queens. Hope they get slammed and I hope SARFU get sued for dishing up these half baked twits - a lesson that merit and not racial considerations should be the criteria.
The mind boggles at the hypocrisy involved.
Gauteng is the most populous region in South Africa by far and it will have no Super 15 - Bwahahahhahahahahahahaha how daft do you get!!! Shame on all the unions that shafted the Lions including the twits running WP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beeno; sincere sympathy (I assume you are a Lions fan). The process that SA Rugby should have followed would have been to emulate the model in NZ. Here the S15 franchise is a separate entity to the Provincial unions that feed each franchise. Gauteng (Jnb and Pta) should have a S15 Franchise distinct from both Lions and Bulls, based at say Soweto. Cape (WP & Boland) should have a S15 Franchise based at say the new Cape Town Stadium. Freestate and Griquas should be feeder unions to a separate central Franchise. Border and EP for the Kings. KZN made up of Sharks and Zululand, playing at say King Cetswayo stadium, and perhaps called "Impi". The aim in NZ is to get the best 5 teams representing NZ for the betterment of NZ rugby.

i hate the kings for what they did to the lions, the lions was just getting good player and young player to became 1 of the sa greats but thanks to the kings and the saru the lions are looseing all of there talent to the bigger unions like the wp. if there was a promotion game i think the lions would have raprd the king and would still be in the s15 and still be bulding the team to get stronger but now they have to begin everything all ofer again and that is not fare to the lions union.

Smart move. Guaranteed a lot more playing time there in the best regional competition in the world.
