Butch James may extend his Super Rugby career for one more season with a possible deal with the Sharks in the works.

James, who announced his retirement from international rugby earlier in the year, has come to the end of his contract with the Lions and his plans for the future have been unclear. It now appears that the fly-half may play on - and, according to the Sunday Times, with the side where it all began.

"I haven't signed yet," James was quoted as saying. "It's about 90% sure. I've been speaking to them and I'm keen to go. I'll basically be the back-up flyhalf (to Patrick Lambie).

"Playing at 10 in this last Currie Cup just made me enjoy it again," he added. "I don't want to in six months think I should have carried on playing. I won't be able to come back then."

The 33-year-old began his career with the Sharks in 2000 before joining Bath in 2007. On his return to South Africa last year, the experienced campaigner signed for the Lions.
