The All Blacks look thin in midfield heading into the Ruby Championship following the news that Conrad Smith will miss the first phase of the competition.

The crafty Hurricanes veteran has been ruled for approximately six weeks after undergoing eye surgery.

"Conrad had two procedures on his left eye for a retinal detachment last week, with the second on Friday. They both went well and he is now recovering at home. At this stage he is expected to be out of training for six weeks," said Hurricanes team doctor Ian Murphy.

Chiefs pair Sonny Bill Williams and Richard Kahui are also unavailable, the former heading to Japan and the latter struggling with a long-term shoulder injury.

thin ... mmmmmm .... they only have Ma'a Nonu and Robbie Fruen, not to mention Tamati Ellison and the option of pushing Dan Carter to 12 and playing Cruden to at 10! Still a very strong midfield!

I agree mate......"thin" ???? NZ has world rugbys greatest depth, not trying to blow our own trumpet, just stating the truth. Heck, we won the RWC Final with our 5th pick 1st-5 hahaha. So "thin" is a poor choice of words. Concerned? Yes. Shaky? No. We have it covered.
