All Blacks forwards Kieran Read and Adam Thomson will miss New Zealand's opening Rugby World Cup match against Tonga in Auckland because of injury, team medic Deb Robinson said Tuesday.

The duo were hurt in New Zealand's 25-20 loss to Australia on Saturday and Robinson said scans showed they would not be ready for the Tonga match on September 9, the first game of the seven-week rugby showcase.

She said Thomson should recover from a bruised elbow in time for New Zealand's second match, against Japan on September 16, but Read had a torn ligament and was likely to miss most of the pool matches.

Read and Thomson would remain with the All Blacks squad as they undergo their rehabilitation.

The tournament hosts are in a pool with France, Japan, Tonga and Canada.
