All Blacks bend rules for Money Bill Williams

Sonny Bill Williams in action for the All BlacksMoney Bill Williams in action for the All Blacks

Money Bill Williams needs to play just one NPC match to be able to be available for the All Blacks end-of-year tour.

Speaking to stuff.co.nz, New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew went on to explain the All Blacks' policy with regards to eligibility.

'His contract allows for that and our policy allows for that provided he plays in the NPC,' said Tew. 'Whether that's the right thing for Money Bill Williams to go on the tour, or whether he's good enough to go on that tour are for other people to decide. The policy is a little open ended – just that you play in the preceding competition. I guess you could say 10 minutes off the bench might tick the box.'

Williams is currently turning out for the Sydney Roosters in Australia's NRL and his availability will depend on the progress of his club. With the grand final scheduled for 5 October, it seems unlikely that he will be able to feature for the All Blacks anytime before the end-of-year tour.

He has signed a two-year contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union and the Chiefs with the hope of appearing for the All Blacks at next year's World Cup, but it remains to be seen what All Blacks coach Steve Hansen's position is on the matter.

'The more important questions are what is the right thing for him to be in the best shape possible for rugby in 2015 and who are the best players to deliver the outcomes [All Blacks coach] Steve [Hansen] wants to deliver,' Tew continued.

Current Counties Manukau coach Tana Umaga, where Williams will play for in the NPC, is excited by the prospect of having the cross-code star in his squad.

'All I know is if he wants to go on the end-of-year tour he’ll have to play some time for us this year,' Umaga said. 'We’ve been prepared for that. If he is feeling good and wants to go on the end-of-year tour after his time with the Roosters then I’m sure we’d have no qualms making time available for him to get on the field.'

I'd also bend the rules to have him back in my test side

Doesn't sound like they have to bend the rules as the files are so low in requirements anyway.

there is zero rule bending, only zero understanding of the situation.

in order to be eligible for the All Blacks and the EOYT, u need to play in the ITM, u can play one minute of one game, or 80 minutes of every game, and both acts would meet the requirements.

SBW in his short time in union did something that no other player could do, he over took nonu as the worlds best 12.

its not surprising the NZRU would go the distance for SBW, but personally i wouldnt go to all that trouble.
SBW needs the All Blacks, the All Blacks dosent need SBW.
in 2013 the All Blacks became the only team in the world to win every test match they played that season, and we didnt rig our fixtures full of easy beats the way meyers Boks did, and we did it all without SBW.

i would love to see a midfield combo of 12 SBW, 13 m nonu, IMO that has the most destructive combination in the world ever.

Danie Gerber is the best center ever, Sonny Bill wouldn't be fit to tie his shoe laces.

No he wouldn't tie them he would eat them lol

Naru that's a great point, we did succeed without him.  It is going to be interesting what enfolds for the coming year with both Nonu and Sonny, will we see one of them warming the bench again?  And what abt Fekitoa's rising star?  Don't envy Hansen making those  decisions.

Mmmm I didn't see any Danie Gerber Sonny Bill comparisons in that article lol, but I guess any reason to say SA or we rule!! haha. To be fair if he was Money Bill Williams he would be in France they offer him a lot more money, he can make more money over their then here. While SBW ain't a natural rugby union player, he is a very gifted athlete, and is a game breaker something the Cheifs have definitely missed.

sbw could be of assistance to the wee chiefies but only as long as he stays out of the ring. Old man Botha had him going before the fight was shortened to save sonny. Looks like Tarzan fights like Jane.
sbw stick to rugby is my advice.

$onny Bill Will.I.Am is not a quality centre; his stint for the All Blacks was a failure as they repeatedly tried to force him ahead of Nonu - it cost them the Tri Nations of 2011. Let him come back, it will create more indecision and hopefully they get stuck on the flat attack for the fourth time and spectacularly fail. Lets hope he has learned to tackle this time around, not that it matters when you are protected by the powers above though.

Shezza Phillipe Sella was the greatest centre, Gerber though was up there. Now Beeno you know they cut the fight short to save Botha rep, here was a fighter who had a far extensive fight experience getting dealt to by someone who had like 5 fights. You know it's true.

Poly I do now that Botha was close to 50!

Cloudy sbw at least added an offload skill to rugby that quite few players do these days. I am sure his SA wife will keep him safe but not on the rugb y ground!:D

Gerber was better than Sella, 24 tests and 16 tries compared to 111 tests and 25 tries says it all really.

...Go Counties....Bit of a coup for Counties signing SBW...obvious choice for him it being Mighty Chiefs country,.... where his cousin Tim Nanai Williams plays and his mum lives also not to mention the centre of the rugby universe.

...don't think players get paid for playing for their province in NZ though Sharkbok - we play for pride in the jersey, not sure whether that's the case in in SA ????

....sorry Sas about relieving the Canes of a better coach in Tana Umaga next season and yr Southland Stags of the Shield last year mate... Cruden you'd have to say the form standoff in NZ after beating the Canes last night ...good on all those Canes fans though for turning up at the graveyard where the Canes have still never ever beaten the Mighty Chiefs...

...Rennie having the added advantage of a fresh backline too whereas half the Canes were out injured... due to the lack of rotating their players I'm guessing ,but we can always blame Hammet for that...Rennies rotation policy heavily criticised by many but paying dividends at the business end of the comp for the Mighty Chiefs...

Brycy: I still have not been able to watch the game but from what I have heard and read it was a good one.:D

SBW will be a big boost for our 4-peat, lol The SA players better hit the weights, I hear one of their best locks is only 105 kilos, bit if a string-bean by some accounts:angel:

...I know what you mean about the SA forwards JW... and some are saying they're only running slow to disguise the use of all those steroids...but I think it may just come naturally...

Ha ha Beeno, you are enjoying being Daffy (I like his all black plumage myself - never did think much of the green ones), :D

Kiwis are fair-minded people overall so don't be too suspicious of our intentions re SA players or team. Go Might--e Stormers! Go Cheetahs! You have our full support.

Beeno just change the colour of daffy's snout and feet to white (not too partial to yellow) and we can name him an honorary member of the All Blacks fan club :D:P

Spot on justwin Sonny honed the off-loads and made them his own and I'm pretty sure he's big enough to keep safe on the rugby field as well as off (no hidden meaning there haha)
