Bok apologises to Ref - well done!
March 20, 2014, 06:21:03

Jannie du Plessis, the burly Springbok tighthead, has apologised for his confrontation with Lourens van der Merwe, the referee of the match between the Sharks and the Reds.

Van der Merwe is a Test referee who is also a schoolmaster at Grey College in Bloemfontein, Du Plessis's old school.

During the match Van der Merwe penalised Du Plessis for his binding at the scrum and told him how it should be done, whereupon Du Plessis hit back in anger saying that Paddy O'Brien, when he was the IRB's manager of referees had gone over binding with him, ending with: "Don't lecture me."

Du Plessis, a medical doctor and a particularly friendly man, regretted his action and on the Monday phoned the referee.

He said that he had a good conversation with Van der Merwe and apologised. He said afterwards it was on the spur of the moment and he did not want to be regarded as somebody who took chances and tried to confront referees.

Nice to see some old world sportsmanship & respect for the ref. We don't want our game to become like that strange game they play with a round ball (soccer).

Who can blame players for getting upset with some ref calls.

I can't.

Good to see Dr Win...Jannie is a true gentleman...just a hothead like his boet sometimes but well done to him.

As a doctor he is very gentle and kind...does a lot of good work helping poor and disadvantaged folk as well as HIV sufferers...not many people know this.

Seb: it's always good to see that there is a line that cannot be crossed in rugby (& I am not talking about the white ones on the field, lol) in terms of player relationships with the ref.

Not only do we not want to go the soccer route but it also teaches kids that play the  game that there are boundaries that must be respected. A valuable life lesson.
