Player Ratings

Quintin van Jaarsveld rates the Springbok players.

15 Willie le Roux Some nice touches on attack but poor under the high ball and continued his habit of kicking out on the full. Looked more comfortable when he moved to the wing. 6/10

14 Bjorn Basson Broke his try-scoring drought but failed to show the hunger to retain his play in the starting line-up. Cost the Springboks three points for being in front of the kicker and missed a tackle. 6/10

13 JJ Engelbrecht Couldn't penetrate the Puma line and made a poor defensive lapse that resulted in his opposite number’s try. 6/10

12 Jean de Villiers (captain) The Springboks’ best and most committed back on the day. Faultless on defence and industrious on attack. 7/10

11 Bryan Habana Didn’t inject himself into the action as he usually does and like his fellow wing, he slipped a tackle. 6/10

10 Morné Steyn Another back guilty of falling off tackles but crucially kicked all his goals which pulled the Springboks through in the end. 7/10

9 Ruan Pienaar Far too slow in clearing from the base. Caught in possession at the ruck which put the Springboks under pressure early on and stuttered on for the full 80 minutes. 4/10

8 Duane Vermeulen The Springboks’ most effective ball carrier. Hit double figures on defence but conceded a couple of penalties. 6.5/10

7 Willem Alberts Made some big hits to live up to his “Bone Collector” moniker and topped the tackle stats (12) but was far less effective with ball in hand than he was last weekend. 6.5/10

6 Francois Louw Did some hard work in holding up the ball in maul situations but overall a disappointing display as Argentina bossed the breakdown. 6/10

5 Juandré Kruger Solid in the line-out but went missing in general play against the aggressive Argentine forwards. 5/10

4 Eben Etzebeth Very good workrate for such a big unit, making 10 tackles, but even the colossus struggled to get over the advantage line. 6/10

3 Jannie du Plessis Solid as ever at scrum time but a tad slow across the park. 6/10

2 Adriaan Strauss A quiet outing for the usually robust hooker. 6/10

1 Tendai Mtawarira Passed the scrum test against Juan Figallo and was workmanlike on defence. 6.5/10

Replacements:

16 Bismarck du Plessis (on for Strauss, 52nd minute) Showed his brute strength in the tight loose, where he fronted up better than Strauss in his 50th Test. 6.5/10

17 Gurthrö Steenkamp (on for Mtawarira, 58th minute) Committed on defence with some hard hits but again conceded a penalty at scrum time. 5.5/10

18 Coenie Oosthuizen (on for Du Plessis, 68th minute) Not enough time to be rated.

19 Flip van der Merwe (on for Kruger, 57th minute) Added grunt to the tight five but missed a couple of tackles. 5.5/10

20 Siya Kolisi (on for Alberts, 68th minute) Not enough time to be rated.

21 Jano Vermaak Not used.

22 Pat Lambie (on for Basson, 62nd minute) Not enough time to be rated.

23 Jan Serfontein (on for Engelbrecht, 68th minute) Not enough time to be rated.

Van Jaarsveld ratings is too funny to believe as reasonable at all. My ratings would be as follows:-

* Le Roux - missed two catches of high balls when under pressure. Defence was good and he did try to get the backline moving - 6

* Basson scored a try when clear in the field - did nothing else and missed a crucial tackle resulting in a try for the opposition - 4,5

* Engelbrecht showed nothing in attacking play and went missing in defence - 4,5

* De Villiers - very little in attacking play - but made some crucial tackles - 6,5

* Habana - was vey quiet and did not achieve much all day long - 6

* Steyn - goal kicking was good - his defence rather poor and his strategic kicking was average to poor - 5.5

* Pienaar - slow and ineffectual service - 4

* Vermeulen - collect kick-offs and defended well around the fringes - absent from all other components of loosie play - 5

* Alberts - bar the collecting of kick-offs - same as Vermeulen - 4,5

* Louw - same as Vermeulen - 5

* Kruger - no grunt and poor in maul and scrum support - 4,5

* Etzebeth - best forward in evidence - 6

* Du Plessis - Very poor show - knocking on a crucial ball - 5,5

* Strauss - quiet and ineffectual - 5,5

* Beast - showed very little throughout the game - 5,5

Steenkamp was pathetic - a rating of 4,5 would be an overrating insofar a his performance is concerned.

Van der Merwe made no difference when he replaced Kruger - 4,5

The above is much more realistic than the ratings of Van Jaarsveld.

 Sport24 ratings-

Willie le Roux 5.5

Hardly the sort of day to suit his unique attacking abilities, but least convincing Bok game yet. Botched two high-ball collections, and one tactical kick went embarrassingly askew into touch off side of boot. Some moments of vital alertness, though.

Bjorn Basson 5.5

Turned on the burners effectively to round off lone SA try in 14th minute, but keeps reputation for being anonymous at times. Known kick-chase strength seldom made use of.

JJ Engelbrecht 5.5

Educative outing for the outside centre; finally a decent test for his defence. One or two chinks in armour did show: culpable in Pumas’ second try. Wallabies, All Blacks may have made a note...

Jean de Villiers 6.5

Most zestful Bok backline player in general play on frustrating, sub-standard day for them as a unit. Keen anticipation of situations spared blushes at times and, as captain, wisely, vigorously engaged eccentric referee Steve Walsh over foul play allegations. Bad judgement, perhaps, in spurning first-half chance to goal kickable penalty?

Bryan Habana 5.5

Usually manages to catapult his way decisively into the action at some stage; that didn’t happen here. Short on composure, by his normally high standards.

Morné Steyn 7

Kept commendably cool head under tremendous pressure, and despite near-cynical Pumas attempts to rattle him. Unwavering accuracy off tee was like gold to cause on nail-biting afternoon. Without it ... ouch!

Ruan Pienaar 4.5

No infusion off bench for Jano Vermaak was a mystery, considering Pienaar’s crucially ponderous 80 minutes. Caught in possession early on, to transfer play territorially and set tone for Pumas’ manic commitment to first-time Bok triumph. Mind you, suffered from lack of protection around fringes.

Duane Vermeulen 6

All fire and brimstone in ball-carrying capacity; pity there weren’t more opportunities for him. But fact remained: this was game where much-trumpeted Bok loosies didn’t quite gel.

Willem Alberts 5.5

Tackled methodically, but didn’t impose himself physically to extent no doubt sought on torrid day. Occasionally seemed a bit off the pace.

Francois Louw 6

Responsible for some heroic work in holding up mauls, but least effective game for a while in turnovers department and conceded a couple of penalties.

Juandré Kruger 5

Mobile initially and got involved in tackle donkeywork. But faded ever more noticeably as game unwrapped, and Pumas gained brutal traction. Should Boks revisit fielding twin “ysters” at lock?

Eben Etzebeth 6

Strong lineout banker, as per normal, on Bok throw and plucky in contesting as well. Handling in open play let him down once. Just about kept temper in check when allegedly victim of bite on arm.

Jannie du Plessis 5.5

Solid enough at scrums, but could be much more industrious elsewhere – among several absentees when it came to much-needed cleanouts, and one key instance of sloppy defence.

Adriaan Strauss 6

Blatantly obstructed on defence as Argentina dotted first try. Nothing wrong with his basics, but perhaps a tad too frantic in admirable wish to be constantly involved.

Tendai Mtawarira 6

Put down very strong scrummaging marker early on, even if Pumas gradually came back forcefully themselves. Less workmanlike in second half; replaced by Gurthro Steenkamp on hour mark.

Standout substitute:

Bismarck du Plessis 6.5

Was this a day where his special brand of physicality might have been better deployed from the outset? Seriously muscular when let loose for 50th cap on 53 minutes, though irritatingly knocked on once when trying to pick up from ruck.

Much better ratings than those of Van Jaarsveld - but even here the ratings of some players - especially the loosies are too high taken in the whole context of the match as a whole. Anybody rated below 6 should never be in the Springbok team - unless they can contribute on a wider basis and where individual mistakes counts less and the in wider game contribution more.

In the game situation yestrday's contribution was a repeat of the loosie contribution in the Soweto test last year - where they did zilch and got paid for it. The same is inevitable in the upcoming tests and something drastic is required in this case. We need five tight forwards with grunt and 3 loosies that can fulfil ALL the requirements of loosies and not only a limited bit on the basis that they have "grunt" - which they have not shown yesterday in any event.

Well i agree with most of the score but giving steyn a 7 for doing his basic skillset namly kicking is for me a bit of a stretch.

by far the worst 2 boks where both pienaar and louw. Louw in my view being the main culprit why the ruck dominance was totally absent. expect the like of hooper and mccaw to destroy louw in every breakdown in the next couple of matches.

we badly need brussouw

Just wanted to alert you guys to the following:

If you look at the computer keyboard on the second row from the top and to the left of #5 you will see numbers starting at 1 to 4.

Trying using those numbers, they actually work.

 The ratings are very charitable. Looks they were both made by the red cross.
