Strauss the next Bok captain - Drotske

Toyota Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske believes that hooker Adriaan Strauss will make a “fine Springbok captain” and has predicted that the blond Bok will be at the helm of the national team before too long.

Drotske was speaking of his pride at the number of Cheetah Springboks this year, and said that the union had succeeded in transforming a stigma that Bloemfontein wasn’t the place to be if you had national aspirations.

After the Cheetahs had a superb Vodacom Super Rugby season, no fewer than six players were announced in the Springbok squad recently, while there are a number of others who are close to selection and will knock on the selection door over the next few years.

Drotske said the perception of Cheetah rugby had changed and he believed it could only benefit players to ply their trade in Bloemfontein.

“Especially after Super Rugby a lot of younger players realised they can play for the Cheetahs and still become Springboks. There was this feeling among rugby players that it is much more difficult for rugby players to become a Springbok if you’re playing in Bloemfontein or Kimberley,” he said.

“I think this year at one stage we had eight players in the group when Robert Ebersohn was there. Johan Goosen would probably have been there if he wasn’t injured and Raymond Rhule came close.

“We’re really proud of the fact that when the team plays well, we can produce depth for South Africa and also players who can start.”

Drotske said that Strauss was destined to become the next Springbok captain, something that would be a proud moment for the Cheetahs.

“I think Adriaan Strauss was brilliant on Saturday, he is a very good leader and is in my opinion one of the guys who will one day lead the Springboks. That will be a very proud day to have a Cheetah guy doing that job.”

The Cheetahs face the Sharks in their next Absa Currie Cup game this weekend.

 Bismaark Duplessis must be pissed off, he had to sit on the bench for John Smit.

Shortly after Smit retires, Bismaark gets injured and after a slow start at test level Adrian Strauss comes into top form.

Strauss is probably playing better than Bismaark ever has, but even if he overtakes Strauss in form- he may sill have to sit on the bench as Strauss must be the favourite to take over from Jean.

Its only a matter of time before Bismark claims the Bok starting spot again. Strauss is great, but Bismark is better. His physical strength is a must at test level

 They should rotate but if it was a Worldcup final tomorrow, would it be better to have both of them the pitch?

They are world class players and may be better to have them both on the pitch.

Strauss could potentially play at 7 if it was a worldcup final tomorrow, or Bismaark could play at 6 as he is a good fetcher.

Having them both on the pitch at the same time would be a formiddable pack.

John Smit was a useful loosehead prop, but useless at tighthead.

As ridiculous as it is changing positions, it is not great having one of them on the bench either.

@sharkbok,

smit was a useless prop period, but at his peak, a fantastic world class hooker. but smit should never have been selected over bizzy, cos bizzy was class.

strauss at flanker would be worse then smit at prop, i reckon just enjoy the fact that u got two world class hookers, the ability to have ur rake fresh for the 80mins and be of caliber that those two is a real luxury.
nothing wrong with rotating the two either, but its clear that at the moment strauss is the deserved incumbent.

@mozter,
lolz, yeah rhule wasnt anywhere near being close, drotskes just talking up his players like all coaches bad and good do, :o)

Sensible stuff from ou saSUE  at last - he is doubtless trying to emulate Storming Ed and Beeno .

Rhule went backwards this year as so often happens with small players. They cant take the pounding. Even Ebersohn went off but at least he got stuck in whereas Rhule is the ultimate in show ponies.

I fear the same re Kolisi - a small loosie and pretty average talent. He needed to be held back and given time to mature - what confidence he has could be dented if he tangles with the big boys. Man Deon is so ready.

Kolis is one of snapsters quota players he insists are necessary for some unworthy reason?

oh yes old deon fourie the poor mans version of heinrich brussouw hey beeno :P

Truth be told straus is a great hooker and also n leader and seeing JDV is not a 100% bet for the RWC 2015 we need to start looking at grooming the next captain in no certain terms.

Strauss is a great leader. But face it, right now JdV is surer of his place than Strauss. I'm picking JdV for our 2019 captain!
