Springboks reveal their elite XV for 2013

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) today announced that 15 players, including exciting youngsters such as Eben Etzebeth, Marcell Coetzee, Juan de Jongh and Pat Lambie and world stars such as Jean de Villiers, Tendai Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis, have been awarded Springbok contracts for 2013.

The group – whose average age is just over 26 years – includes the core of the Springboks Test players from 2012, while players who are based overseas or who have signed contracts with overseas clubs, were not awarded national contracts.

"We’ve kept as many of our top players in South Africa as we could by awarding them national contracts, despite the powerful lure of the pound, euro and yen," said SARU CEO Jurie Roux.

“We worked hard with the Springbok Management and Sarpa to ensure the best possible deal is placed on the table for the players. A further five contracts are still available and will be finalised in due course.

“Last year provided Heyneke Meyer with an ideal opportunity to see what is needed in the Test arena, and by contracting this group of players, we have secured a core group for 2013. The average age of the contracted group is not very high for Test rugby, which bodes well for the future.”

The following players, who represented the Springboks last year but will be leaving South Africa to play abroad in the next couple of months, were not awarded contracts: Andries Bekker, Juandré Kruger, Morné Steyn, Bryan Habana, JP Pietersen and Zane Kirchner.

“All six of these players were going to receive contracts, but the fact that they have indicated that they have signed with overseas clubs or are planning to do so, has ruled them out of the reckoning,” said Roux.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer said: “I’m very excited about the contract group. Most of these players showed last year they have what it takes to play for the Springboks and they can only get more experienced and improve further.

“Losing experienced players to overseas teams is not ideal, but it’s their right to further their careers abroad.”

The Springbok contract group is:

Willem Alberts (The Sharks, 20 caps), Marcell Coetzee (The Sharks, 12), Juan de Jongh (DHL Western Province, 14), Jean de Villiers (DHL Western Province, 84), Bismarck du Plessis (The Sharks, 46), Jannie du Plessis (The Sharks, 42), Eben Etzebeth (DHL Western Province, 11), Francois Hougaard (Vodacom Blue Bulls, 27), Pat Lambie (The Sharks, 20), Tendai Mtawarira (The Sharks, 41), Pierre Spies (Vodacom Blue Bulls, 50), Frans Steyn (The Sharks, 53), Adriaan Strauss (Toyota Free State Cheetahs, 21), Flip van der Merwe (Vodacom Blue Bulls, 23), Duane Vermeulen (DHL Western Province, 7).

i guess this means the du plesiss bros arent leaving for france., good news for SA and shark fans.

interesting that morne would have been offered a contract if wasnt going overseas, his form has been real good in 2013 IMO and while many may no agree, IMO hes the form SA flyhalf.

good core of players remaning with SA though, will ensure the Boks are still a force to be reckoned with.

Hopefully by the end of the season they can add the likes of Taute, Rhule, JJ, Serfontein, Jantjies, Goosen, Reinach, Kitshoff, Malherbe, Coenie, Steph du Toit, de Jager, Kolisi, Brussouw, Elsadt, Labascagne and Botha to that list.

By then the likes of de Jongh, Jean, Alberts, Jannie, Flip and Spies should be removed from the list

@A girl,
is there a limit to how many players SARU can offer a national contract to??? cos ezebeths means performance is a standard to go by, as is loyalty, cos that list of urs are all players that have loeads of potnetial that should be encouraged to stay, am not to fussed on brussow though, but it wouldnt bother me either way.

i dont agree with alberts and spies, spies is starting to come into his own, and still has the potential to recapture some of that 2009 form, if he was half as good as he was before that injury in the 2009 EOYT, he would be the best No8 in the world.

@ Sasu, thanks for the info.  IMO, I do not think Spies has worked hard to regain his place in the squad yet, and therefor  his inclusion is seriously questionable.  Morne Steyn on the other hand has stepped up to the plate this year, his selection is defo on merit alone.

I'll add Robert Ebersohn in A girl's Wanna-see-list of future players.  Great talent  talent still out there.

Sasue

The list provided by SARU is weirdf - to say the leaast.  The form of at least six of the players on that list is so poor this year that they hardly make the bench for their Super 15 franchise teams,   Some are outright funny and shows absolutely the thinking of the weirdos - inclusive of he coach.

A girl;s list has also some weird names.    Rhule is from Ghana and has years to go before he can change cittizenship - cannot play for SA under present cir[removed]stances (somebody must have fouled up in the case of the Under 20 WC and slipped him in silently without the Government knowing it).   Elstadt is leaving to play in France and that would disqualify him immediately.   Brussow is not popular with Meyer and will not be added.

The least said about J J Engelbrecht and Jantjies the better,   On A girl's list I would go with players that has a real chance of playing for SA in future and will support the following:-

Goosen, Reinach, Kitshoff, Malherbe, Coenie, Steph du Toit, de Jager, Kolisi, Labuscagne and Botha.

However, normally Springboks only get such contracts after playing regularly for the team and I think most of the players mentioned by A girl may be added - but probably only once they have done their apprenticeship on National level.

Mike I think it would be better if you kept your ignorant trap shut - it would be a blessing to all of us. Rhule has been in SA for years and qualified to play for SA ages ago.

Elstadt has just extended his contract with the Stormers to 2014.

Are you saying JJ is not playing good rugby at the moment you stupid idiot?

A girl

I said that Rhule is from Ghana.  I think he has been in SA for two years now - not for many years - so do your homework please.

Engelbrecht will not play for SA again - sad to say - so he is out.   Jantjies - dolt - is not up to standard.   Sorry if I was wrong about Elstadt - but it was in the paper that he was going to Stade Francais.  If he changed his mind I was not aware of it.

In any event dumbo - they only sign contracts with established players that have been established in the team - not with newbies - so all the players mentioned by you will have to wait another year and solidy their position in the Sptingbok team before they will bee put on national contract.

A girl

Engelbrecht is one-dimensional and will not become an established Springbok allowing for a contract with him.  In any event Meyer did not invite him to the training camp and will not recommend a contract for him
