Serfontein given another starting run on for bulle

Ex keo

Why oh why is Arno Botha not at 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why drop Willemse? Will Wynaand force out serfontein I wonder.

Jan Serfontein gets another shot to prove his mettle before Wynand Olivier returns to the side.

The Bulls have made several changes to their team to face the Cheetahs at Loftus this weekend. As expected, both Flip van der Merwe and Akona Ndungane are included in the starting line-up following their injuries.

Ndungane’s return sees Jurgen Visser return to fullback, where he replaces the injured Zane Kirchner. Paul Willemse drops to the bench with the return of van der Merwe.

The only other change to the team that lost to the Brumbies two weeks ago sees Frik Kirsten play ahead of Werner Kruger, who drops to the bench.

Changes to the bench see Callie Visagie brought in for Willie Wepener, Rudy Paige making the match 22 for the first time this season along with Ulrich Beyers, who will cover the outside backs.

Bulls: 15. Jürgen Visser, 14. Akona Ndungane, 13. JJ Engelbrecht , 12. Jan Serfontein , 11. Lionel Mapoe, 10. Morne Steyn, 9. Jano Vermaak, 8. Pierre Spies (c), 7. Dewald Potgieter, 6. Deon Stegmann, 5. Juandre Kruger, 4. Flip van der Merwe , 3. Frik Kirsten, 2. Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1. Morne Mellet. Substitutes: 16. Callie Visagie, 17. Werner Kruger, 18. Paul Willemse, 19. Arno Botha, 20. Rudy Paige, 21. Louis Fouche , 22. Ulrich Beyers

Botha is not a 6, would have made sense to play him at 7 ahead of Potgieter. I'd rather see Willemse ahead of Kruger at 5. Not sure why Ndungane is starting......Beyers would have been a far better bet. This kid is a good player, was great at 15 for the Baby Boks in Etzebeth's side.

Good to see Callie Visagie on the bench, he is a good hooker, far better than useless Wepner. Also good to see Frik Kirsten starting ahead of Werner Kruger at 3.

Ludeke showed the same stupid blind faith in Stegman, Dewald Potgieter and Jaques Potgieter over Arno Botha and CJ Stander last year - its madness. Botha makes the Bok training squad but cant get a start with the Bulls - Ludeke is a fool

Can only imagine Botha has a lingering injury? Otherwise no sense in having him on the bench behind Donkey Dewald and Kong Deon.

Here's hoping Serfontein has a blinder and makes his selection permanent both with the Bulls and Boks

Glad Serfontein is starting! This game is gonna be a blinder, wouldn't know who to bet on for a win.

Dave ask yourself what Stegman  actually achieves. As far as pottie is concerned I have been quite impressed with his high work rate and physicality. To me Arno should play 6. What does Stegmann do in your view?

Ludeke is not in the class of Meyer as a coach. Meyer took the bulle from bottom dwellers to being a top side. h edid it over a period of some 5 years as I recall. Moves slowly but moves.

What do you think of playing Juandre at 7. The guy is on my opinion fast enough for it (Have I queried this before). The bulle need more authority in their pack. Playing Botha at and Juandre at 7 there would do the trick. Flip and Willemse as your two locks. Now that begins to resemble a real bulle pack.

As for Serfontein he had better take his chance. Bulle take Bok status very seriouly and once you are a bok they dont like to drop you for a non Bok. Olivier is a senior bok center for them. Thats how bulle think.

The loss of Stander was a major blunder but of the type that is having a bad effect on SA rugby. How many players are Nz and Oz loosing to the NH and Japan? Love to see some details.

I will be crucified for saying it but they miss Greyling on the loosehead as he has turned in many a sound performance for the bulle dispite his brain implosion when playing for the Boks at Dunedin, Oh how I regret that loss (should have won by twenty!!) Is Greyling injured? Where is he now?

Cant agree that Wepener is useless although he is getting on now.  Chilli is BOG ordinary. Bulle need to look around if they want to be a top side. SA has three class Hooker - Bissie, Strauss and Tiaan. Cooper looks set to join that bunch and the Kings hooker, whose name escapes me is looking promising  - big bustling hooker?

Beeno, Stegman is your traditional fetcher, he does trun ball over, but he is a stupid player in that he infringes too often. I quite like Dewald Potgieter and he has been playing well, but Botha is better. If you play Botha or Dewald at 6, the Bulls loosetrio lacks balance.

There is no need to play Juandre Kruger at 7, given his preformances dont merit his inclusion. He should be on the bench for the Bulls. I just wish we had the chance to see Jacques du Plessis for the Bulls. I hear he is a mountain of a lad and really athletic for his size (2.01m and 119kg). He is injured at the moment and been part of the Baby Bok squad, where he played 7, but like Steph du Toit, his best position is lock.

The Bulls would be crazy to bring Olivier back ahead of Serfontein. I have always rated Olivier, but his best days are done and he needs to serve the Bulls off the bench at best, but I'd rather see the promising Frans Venter on the bench, with Jan at 12 and JJ at 13. This centre pair has the potential to be the best in SA by some distance.

Wepner is useless, adds nothing in general play and cant throw into the line-outs. Chiliboy was awesome last year, but has been flat this year. They are sorted with Callie Visagie on the bench. He is the Lions hooker who impressed me last year.

Greyling is no loss, I prefer young Morne Mellett who started the S15 really well, but has dipped in intensity lately.

To me the bulle pack we have been seeing thus far doesnt have it to win this comp - it lacks grunt. What is the solution. They have to change things.
It will be interesting to see how Hougie goes. Break may have done him good. Sefontein and JJ are exciting and with Kirchner out there is more punch perhaps from 15. With Serfontein and Venter at center you might consider JJ on the wing? Next year Pollard will be at flyhalf. He looked good in his brief stint.

Lot of youngsters stepping up in the bulle backline

Another myth. Stegmann does not give away as many penalties. Not compared to other forwards, in any case.  He has played 5 games thus far, and gave away one penalty each in three of them, none in one of them and 2 in another. That is a total of five penalties in five games. There are a number of Bulls players who have also conceded 2+ penalties in at least one game.

Hougaard played two and gave away 2 penalties in one of them.

Kirsten gave away 2 penalties each in three games. Total for 2013 - 8

Mellet gave away five in one game. Total for 2013 - 7

D Potgieter gave away 3 in one game. Total - 4

Chilli is the same as Stegmann with 2 penalties in one game and then one each in three games. Total for 2013 - 5.

W Kruger gave away 2 in one game and then one ech in two games. Total for 2013 - 4

Its a historical thing with Stegman, not just this season. If he has only played 3 this year then its hardly much to go by.

Beenkop, no, I want to see JJ stay at 13 as I think he has the credentials to be a really good 13. We are lacking in an obvious choice for the Boks at 13, so I am hinging on JJ to emerge as the answer. I like the way he looks to beat his opposite number through speed and a step. He does not take the direct route. He struggled last year with converting from wing to centre defensively, but to his credit he has sorted this issue out. He still sometimes tends to rush out of the line in defense, but its something many SA centres tend to do.

Serfontein needs time to settle at 12 and once he finds his feet he will no doubt be in a position to unleash JJ outside him. This centre combination has huge potential, certainly for me, the most exciting in SA by some distance.
