Watson on way back for Kings

The Southern Kings look set to be strengthened by the return of their two first choice captains when they get back from their Vodacom Super Rugby tour next week.

Luke Watson, the appointed captain for the season, and lock Darron Nell, who led the Kings in the second match after Watson was injured before himself being ruled out, have been named in the Eastern Province Kings side to play against South Western Districts Eagles in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Watson will start the game at No 8 and it will be the first appearance he has made on the playing field since he sustained a throat injury in the opening Super Rugby clash with the Western Force in February. Nell will also start, in his regular position of lock as the EP Kings go out to build on their impressive Vodacom Cup win over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last week.

The improvement in the depth available to the Eastern Cape franchise has been one of the impressive features of the 2013 season thus far, with the EP side not taking a step backwards in the Vodacom Cup, and the Madibas making the semifinals of the Varsity Cup for the first time. In addition, players who have come out of the academy in the Eastern Cape are impressing at Super Rugby level, something that Kings director of rugby Alan Solomons has credited to the hard work put in by Robbie Kempson.

The Kings finish off their tour of New Zealand and Australia when they play the Rebels in Melbourne on Saturday before returning to Port Elizabeth for what has become an eagerly awaited clash with the Vodacom Bulls. Having both Watson and Nell back for that game should they get through the fixture against the Eagles will be a significant boost to the Kings’ chances.

Luke Watson, a natural six in my opinion, seems to prefer playing at 8.

Jacques Engelbrecht has been a revelation at eightman this season so far.

I hope they don't try to fix something that ain't broke by slotting Luke back into the 8 jersey.
