Goosen compared to Carter
March 14, 2013, 13:38:18

Ex Supersport

It may be to add more pressure onto his young shoulders, but Toyota Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen was paid the ultimate compliment when one of New Zealand’s leading rugby magazines asked the question on their cover this week – “Is this the new Dan Carter?”

The 20-year-old Goosen, currently in Sydney with his teammates as they prepare for their Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Waratahs on Friday, was given the honour by New Zealand Rugby magazine, Rugby News, who used the comparison to Carter, a World Cup winner and World Rugby player of the year, as the future of South African rugby.

Goosen has already played for the Boks and started against the All Blacks at FNB Stadium last year but his season was curtailed by injury and the youngster has played down comparisons to Carter in an interview in the magazine.

For one, Goosen points out he is far from the wunderkind that everyone says he is, and believes his tactical kicking needs to improve significantly if he is to make the same sort of impact on world rugby that Carter did for the All Blacks.

“I think I must listen to that praise and let it come in and go out,” he told Rugby News, “I must keep my head in the game and focus on what I am doing.

“(My tactical kicking) is a weakness in my game, so I am working hard on it,” adding he had taken many tips from working with veteran Morne Steyn during last year’s Castle Rugby Championship.) (As I suggested he would)

It was good to see the youngster slot all his kicks as the Cheetahs shocked the Highlanders in Invercargill on the weekend, and given the confidence he received from the win and his own resurgence in play, there is hope that if he stays injury free he could reach the heights others think he can.

For now though, he simply wants to play.

Go Goosen, and YES he can be the worlds best.

Bull, Cruden will easily eclipse him.. .:) Understand an article in a SA rugby mag is going to confirm this.

Beeno can you not see that I have allready published this article? You often post articles that have allready been posted by others on this forum? Is this intentional?

Poly, Cruden is good, but Goosen is on another level - no contest

Saffex, it was tongue in cheek regarding Cruden but  Goosen has not achieved anything to suggest he is on another level at Super 15 or international level. If you think you have the best young 1st fives again your opinion but if you had to rate against who has had the more potent backline SA or NZ teams then I'ld pump for NZ as NZ seems to produce the more explosive, creative backs over the years that score tries.

Poly the big difference is that you have a national coach who knows what he is doing. Hell we had three of our S15 sides make the top 5 in last years competition and the best our Bok coach could do was achieve a 67% record.

His selections and gameplans were poor. I'd love to see your coach take our pool talent and see what % he would achieve.

Meyer does not do our talent justice at all

Saffex, I agree to a point. Don't get me wrong I think Goosen is a great talent that needs a free reign. A query though, I know the Sharks have been perenial bridesmaids, they're the "almost there team" but lose it at the final hurdle, but they play an attractive type of rugby.....would John Plumtree ever be considered for Bok Coach or the fact that he is not SA count against him, or that his winning record counts him out, or even would he make a difference if he was coach. Maybe new blood outside of SA is needed.

I am not sure Plum is the answer, but I would be more than happy with a foreign coach, in particular a Kiwi.

I dont rate our coaches, Plum is probably the best of an average bunch. Our lot are just too conservative when it comes to selections and the way they play the game

Don't flatter yourselves as you'll never have the class of rugby players available to us in NZ. Obviously no one can come close to the star quality of Dan Carter but we do like to amuse ourselves by leading our South Afrikaan friends along on the end of a piece of string.

Goosen is still under 21 and is doing as well doubtless as carter ever did.

Black udder you are making a compltete twat of yourself. our player talent was better than yours prior to isloation and just watch Meyer get your wee abs number as the Boks re comence their decades long rule of the wee abs.

Ou carter is showing signs of being on the skids and wee macaaaw even more so. crusties can only harken back to past glories.

Sorry if the truth hurts so much Beano. No one has obviously explained it to you properly. Your jealous rants won't change anything so better if you just except Kiwis will be World Champions for a very long time due to our physical prowess, natural athleticism, and our ever increasing pool of talent.. Australia second , England third, France fourth, Samoa fifth and SA somewhere after that not surewhere though.
