A Newspaper dedicated solely to sport in South Africa,your thoughts
February 28, 2013, 10:16:33

 I can't let the cat out the bag just yet,but someone in Pretoria with the means to pull it off is considering the idea of a national newspaper dedicated exclusively to sport,ala those found in Italy,Greece,Spain,Portugal etc.

Your thoughts please.

Generally,what makes an all-sport newspaper more efficient than shady online reportings or questionable articles in the sports section of genral newspapers is that with the all-sport newspapers,a journalist or journalists are normally focused on 1 specific sports team,meaning they have the best insight,get to know that club's management,coaching staff,players,players agents(of course - we wouldn't have transfer rumours without them) etc.

Obviously the main focus would be cricket,soccer and rugby,both local and international.

Would be great, provided they have proper sports reporters. We have a serious shortage of real good neutral reporters. If they rely on the likes of Gavin Rich, Brendan Nel, Keo, etc, they could just as well give it up.

I think this would be a phenomenally stupid idea.

Gaining an increasing share of a shrinking market is a sure-fire way of losing lots of money very quickly and there is no doubt that printed media is a shrinking market.

If you disagree, ask yourself why someone would buy this crap newspaper when they can simply click on the Sports24 or Supersport website?

Stormer 77 one hopes the venture is a success but the web is dealing the printed media a heavy blow.

However, if the quality is there they may pull it off.  Very risky venture.

How ou roointwit knows it will be a crap newspaper I dont really know. Thumbs Down

 Poor Rooinek,he thinks SuperSport and News 24 are flawlwess benchmarks.The biased Sports Boradcaster and the News sight filled with people kissing SuperSPort's ass trying to get jobs there............

Ya I still have a few doubts,but having lived in continental Europe myself and having seen how succesful the concepts are,it can work if done right.

As Bongani says,it depends on who is writiing.

 @Stormer77

What the small minded Rooinek does not understand is that the content is more important than the medium. If the newspaper is a success, it is easy to turns this into a website. (Media is funded by advertising- this is newspapers are so cheap and sometimes even free, so a website could publish the same content articles online- and have a small subscription membership fee  or be purely driven by online advertising whereby it is free to read the news articles.)

New Media technology is the conversion of tradtional media and IT(Informational Technology).

If the content is succesful, then it could be expanded from print into digital, as well as other traditional media like TV.

Maybe twenty years ago....nobody wants to pay for newspapers any more. Even the New York Times has recently needed a friendly cash injection.

Stompie77, if you don't like the answers then don't ask the questions.

I suspect the reason you chose to respond to my frank and honest answer in a rude and defensive manner is because you have some personal involvement. Well, perhaps you should have said so . . . and maybe I saved you from putting your family on skid row.

Starting up a newspaper in 2013 is a very stupid idea.

Ok Rooibos

They're contemplating starting one in the United Kingdom too,by the way.

Well when it comes to football/soccer,there is definately a need,as both News 24 and SuperSport are EPL ass-kissers,who don't focus much on La Liga,Bundesliga and Serie A.

I guess interviews with SA rugby players playing in the Northern hemisphere could be an idea,to get insights on how they are adjusting to their new surroundings,styles of play,if they feel its made them better players etc.

And when we fail at World Cups across all sports,Olympics,African Cup of Nations,Champions Trophy or have to see a team of South Africans win a T20 World Cup for England,we can actually use a RUTHLESS,BRUTALLY HONEST,DAMNING ASSESSMENT of our failures,not this nonsense from journalists too scared to lose their jobs.

@stormer77,

like mozter said, maybe 20 years ago, but the newspaper industry really is a dying medium, geebers, i cant remember the last time i even bought one and the last time i read one, there was nothing in there i didnt already know cos of the internet and the access that everyone has to the net especially via smadtphones and their millions of news aps.

while ur right theres some kind of biasedness towrds a tournament/league or team or even sport, but its not a real problem and can be easily solved by fiding a site that does cater to ur need. goggle search seems to be a thorn in ur idea IMO.

IMO u should apply that idea to a website and target some kind of app. the app is where the money would be.

Oh I see! So someone else is contemplating starting a sports paper in the UK? Well why didn't you say so? That changes everything. If that is the case then it has to be a brilliant money-making idea . . . I mean, if someone else is doing it then it can't be that stupid, right?

Go on then Stompie77, sink your money into this doomed little enterprise if you must . . . just don't ask other people for their thoughts and then have a little whine when they give you their . . . ummmm . . . thoughts!

Its not a bad idea at all! It all depends on the sports and the readers! Being a newspaper which is a cheap medium the focus would have to be on football and then the lesser participated sports like Cricket, rugby , boxing , swimming , running etc.

To just dish the idea is pretty naive and ignorant! Yes there are plenty of sport sites and bloggs as well as magazines which all make money from their clients.

personally i utilise all types of information to gather my news ie sites, bloggs , magazines , newspapers and Dstv .Cant see why it wont work! May not be everyones cup of tea but there is always a market for sport!
